Shame as this is, when you do find this rare treat it should be snapped up as it is invariably delicious. Best described as deep-fried bread dough, its closest relative is probably the doughnut but the two are emphatically not the same!Duchess' Bannock offers authentic and delicious bannock from what is clearly a time-worn recipe with a random and endless selection of daily variations. Your coronary arteries won't thank you for going too often but it's worth checking it out periodically if you're in Alert Bay for any length of time. As almost every other review recommends, Bannock and Berries is a classic and exceedingly delicious, though Duchess does it just as well with plain old cinnamon and sugar. Get stuck in!
The Duchess restaurant in Alert Bay serves delicious bannock with efficiency and a sense of humor. It is a popular spot among locals, and visitors should definitely stop by to try it out. We ordered the bannock taco, which was generous in size and enough to share. The owner, Duchess, kindly advised us against ordering two portions to avoid wasting food. The bannock was expertly made, with a light and fluffy texture despite being deep-fried. The toppings were plentiful and flavorful, making it a meal to remember. Highly recommended.
As Italians, we had never tried bannock before, but we found it to be simply delicious! The owner was very friendly and sat down to chat with us while we enjoyed our meal. Overall, it was a very pleasant experience that we really enjoyed.
We stopped in to Duchess's while in Alert Bay on a family holiday. The experience was fabulous...Duchess saw our group of 2 senior citizens, 3 children ages 6-13 and myself walk in and joked that we had a big group! She recommended a large Bannock and Berries ($8). We shared it and it was AMAZING!!!! I don't know where else you can go to get dessert for 6 people for that price!!! If you appreciate a good "hole in the wall" place, this will not disappoint!!! We will definitely go again!!!!
We decided to try bannock, a local specialty, at this restaurant. It's a type of deep-fried bread served with fruit and cream. It may not be the healthiest option, but it was definitely worth trying. The restaurant had a nice and friendly atmosphere, with locals stopping by. Overall, it's something you have to experience at least once!
