Sadly didn't have time to investigate everything in depth, but the service was lovely and the food was exquisite! Have the grand platter well worth the money and a good feed. Museum has good memorabilia and gifts for a range of budgets. Well worth a stop to learn about the bridge and the paratroopers.
After parking and visiting the Pegasus Bridge Museum we decided to cross the bridge for lunch. We chose the quaint cafe on the left and we were glad we did. We were waited on by the proprietor Mme. Gondree, who we realized later was quite famous for among other things, surviving the liberation of her cafe as a young child. The service and the food were excellent! We wish we had known more of the history of the cafe before eating there and will like to go back again.
It was a privilege to meet Madame Gondrée who greeted us. It had great atmosphere and the food and coffee was served by Madame Gondrée which made it quite special. The cafe has lots of old photos and items through the years. No photos allowed to be taken and they don’t take credit cards. For the people who say she is rude, they must of been quite rude themselves ie couldn’t read the signs NO PHOTOS or were upset they don’t take credit cards……..
Cafe Gondree is a small French cafe in Benouville next to Benouville Bridge. (Pegasus Bridge). The cafe is forever etched in British Airbourne history, Pegasus bridge, and the first House in France liberated on D-Day. A must visit for the history buff or D-Day tourist when visiting Pegasus Bridge , the museum and other areas of interest nearby.
Usually stop here for a quiche or an omelette if we have an afternoon crossing from Caen. Lovely place, food, and staff. Madame Gondrée works in the café too and looks fabulous (she was 5 when the café, then owned by her parents, was liberated by the British in 1944). Only thing was the wasps, but I guess they're like death and taxes: inevitable. If you've got any kind of service patch handy for military, police, emergency services, volunteer services, etc, the inside is adorned with them.
