Feedback gevenWhile staying down the street at Victor's Residenz in Berlin (see my review) we happened upon Ristorante Pizzeria San Angelo and what a find it was! We entered the restaurant and were warmly greeted by what seemed like the owner and he told us to sit where ever we wanted. We chose a table near the window and before we knew it, the candles were lit and bread, Parmesan cheese and balsamic vinegar appeared on the table ready for mixing and dipping. Normally we have to ask for this, but not here. It's like he read our minds! He gave us several minutes to look over the menu then came over to take our drink orders and choice of entrees. We ordered a carafe of Montepulciano which as it turns out, was excellent! Now, we were really excited to get the meals going. I ordered the Eggplant Parmesan which is what I usually order in Italian restaurants and my husband ordered the Spaghetti Bolognese, again, one of two different dishes he regularly orders in Italian restaurants. Keeping in mind we have had these two great Italian meals many times, we judged both at San Angelos to possibly be the best we've ever eaten. Not too large, the portions were just right. This is important because we had no way to store leftovers. The thought of having the remainders of these delicious dinners discarded would have been painful. They were THAT good! The bolognese sauce was richly flavored with onion, celery and carrot, different types of finely chopped beef and normally simmered at length to produce a thick sauce. Absolute heaven! My eggplant was prepared with sliced eggplant dipped in beaten eggs and dredged in breadcrumbs before being fried in oil, layered with tomato sauce and cheese, then topped with mozzarella and shaved parmesan. Superb! We topped off the dinner with limoncello, which is traditionally made from the zest of Femminello St. Teresa lemon skins soaked in grain alcohol for at least a week, (not vodka, like some bars do) and served as an after dinner digestivo. When I make mine at home, I add water and a simple syrup. A lemony concoction of pure bliss. But be careful, it is VERY strong and is made for sipping, not downing shots.I've seen on some sites that this restaurant is closed, but we were just there 3 weeks ago and it obviously wasn't then. It also stated it is a Mexican and Italian restaurant, and of this I'm not sure. All I CAN say is it was one of the best Italian meals I can remember having. If it is closed, Germany should have a national day of mourning.
We arrived late one evening to this restaurant & the staff were very welcoming. The menu gave us plenty choice & the food was excellant. The wine was very reasonable. I would recommend the pizza but be hungry....it is big.
