This restaurant was not bad; it just was not very good. the food was ordinary and the service was ordinary. It was in a non-descript part of a not very exciting town (the fortified city is a wonder, however, and not to be included in these remarks.) In conclusion, at our one experience, both of our credit cards were said not to work and that they were refused by their "machine". This was of course a ploy to get us to pay in cash, which we did. Our credit cards worked again immediately thereafter - just not in Histoire Gourmande. I see no reason to eat here.
It's a pleasant room, but uncomfortable chairs. The food was uniformly flavorless. Cassoulet may have been typical, but then I guess I don't like the dish. No flavor, but huge chunks of fat. The faux filet was not over cooked, but bland and tough. The salad and dessert were pathetic, and extremely overpriced. A miscalculation of the bill (27€!!) was probably not intentional, but only grudgingly corrected. The house red wine was very nice. You can do much better than this in Carcassonne.
My wife and i were very fortunate to have Christmas lunch here. I say fortunate as not much was open therefore our choices were limited. Nicolas from 45 B&B arranged it for us and we both had the house specialty Cassoulet. It was delicious and the staff were very friendly. Going to this great little restaurant made our Christmas which could otherwise have been very lonely. Cassoulet-great,deserts-lovely,price-reasonable. The Cassoulet was 18 euros which we were more than happy to pay given the day it was!! We went back numerous times over the ensuing week!
My husband and I found this restaurant by accident but we were looking for a traditional cassoulet for lunch. I thought our meal was superb, the wine delightful and my husband who speaks very little French usually makes friends with all the animals he encounters, he thought Charlotte was great fun and probably managed to get her entire vocabulary out before we left. The intimacy of a restaurant where the owner is concerned with your well being and the chef is delighted to show you how he makes the cassoulet was lovely. Just a note, I do not expect service to be fast but I expect a nice atmosphere, kindness shown to my curious husband who loves the food and wine of France and so will ask lots of questions, and great food. Just a side note I don't travel to Carcasonne to eat lasagna no matter how delicious...I am very tired of how rude people can be writing these critiques and was very surprised to see how comfortable people feel being critical of the decor, the time it takes to get served and various other things they find to be rude about. We love visiting France..we have had a few cassoulets and this was by far the best.
