There were 6 of us for Christmas lunch, we paid £60 a head which isn’t cheap, all of the other tables had white linen napkins, our table for some reason had cheap red paper napkins! The starter I had was just awful, a dry pastry tart shell with no moisture! The main was adequate, the desert nothing to write home about! We’ve been here so many times but I won’t be rushing back!
My wife and I rarely get the opportunity to go out alone, on one of the rare occasions that we were able to have a Date Night we booked in to The Old Hall. We arrived at 20:00, are table wasn 't booked till 20:30 so we sat in the bar area and had a glass of wine, we then were shown to our table and drinks and food orders were taken relavitely quickly. We waited a bit for starters which when they arrived were a bit uninspiring. I ordered Devilled Whitebait, my thinking would be that they would be in some spicy batter, but when arrived they were just normal fried Whitebait. My wife ordered Smoked Salmon, Poached Egg and Avocado. The poached egg the yolk was solid and not runny and the avocado was just half an avocado, placed on the plate. However the portions were of generous size. This is when things started taking a nose dive. We had finished our starter at about 21:00 and then started to notice that we had not seen any staff for a while, other tables started noticing this also and some groups went to find out what the issues were as people had received starters and nothing else. The consensus was that the kitchen was very busy, the seating area we were in was holding around 15 people which I would not see as a lot of covers for a professional chef, we accepted this explanation at first but then at around 21:45 people were getting up and leaving without having their main. We decided to hang on a bit longer and got chatting to a group of 6 ladies who had just finished their desserts, they informed us that they came in at 18:50 and ordered a main and pudding each and they had only just finished 3 hours later! At 22:00, an hour and a half after we sat down for our meal we still had no mains so decided to call it a day and pay for the starter and wine we had. At the desk was a young girl who was visibly upset and was very apologetic about the evening, we explained that obviously issues were within the kitchen and not her fault but it appeared she was left to face the front line on her own. So we left, hungry and very disappointed.
No atmosphere. No sense of occasion. Boring and dated decor. Very slow service. Wrong orders arrived. Wine with fly in it. Staff need more training. Food ok but nothing special. I would not recommend.
This review is based purely on my visit to the restaurant. I have dined at the old hall off and on for numerous years, and have never been disappointed until my latest visit last night. What a fall from grace. I had what was described as cheese and onion pie but turned out to be a pie with lots of diced potatoes in what I think was a cheese sauce. It came with garden peas and gravy as described priced at £9.95. For that price I naturally assumed this came with chips. How wrong was I. My sister in law ordered pea and ham soup as a starter this came cold so she sent it back. When it finally came again it was at best warm. Out of sheer embarrassment she couldn't send it back again. Drinks and meals are very overpriced for what you now get. It has recently changed hands and now describes itself as a pub with rooms. They should in my opinion visit a few pubs and look at what those pubs provide with their meals in comparison to what they charge.
