My friend and I stumbled upon this little gem on Tuesday. The laminated handwritten menu offered a good choice of dishes. So impressed when waiter informed us of some extra dishes available on the day.I had organic salmon and my friend chose duck confit. Both delicious and generous portions by London standards. There were about five occupied tables which is adequate from a safety point of view. Bottle of prossecco was high quality. Will definitely return staff were efficient and friendly.
I have been a loyal patron of Shampers since around 1978/9 when Don Hewitson owned the restaurant and Simon served as the manager. Unfortunately, I have not been able to visit in over two years due to the pandemic. After relocating to South Devon from working in London, I was looking forward to visiting and catching up with Simon Roff in the next couple of weeks. It's a shame to see one of the few independent, high-quality wine bars go. I have enjoyed dining here with family, for business, and with friends, so it is truly heartbreaking.
The golden era has come to an end. In my opinion, this was the best wine bar in London. The ambience was wonderful, the food was well-prepared and sensible, and the wine selection was great. The addition of Madeira to the wine list was the cherry on top, earning it a perfect 10/10. I'm not sure why it closed; perhaps Simon decided to retire to Cornwall. My only complaint is that I was unaware of any closing ceremony.
I arrived with the expectation of enjoying delicious food and a great atmosphere, but unfortunately the restaurant is closed. It's a shame that this unique wine bar, which stood out from the rest, is no longer in business. My heart goes out to the dedicated team who worked hard to keep it running, only to be hindered by the challenges of the Covid pandemic. Thank you for the memories. Bryan.
