I was recommended the Devils advocate by a work colleague and it did not disappoint. The food was excellent as was the extensive drinks menu. Staff were very friendly but a big shout out to Declan, who in my opinion, went the extra mile for us. Incredibly knowledgeable and extremely attentive which added to a great night. 5 out of 5. Definitely will be going back
The bar itself is really nice. It’s just located up some steep steps on Advocates Lane. When we entered it was busy so we remained standing with our drinks. After a while we noticed some people leaving from up stairs. I decided to walk upstairs to check if a table was free. No longer than 10 seconds and I was being chased and then interrogated on why I was up there by one of their staff. The little blonde man said “Can I help you? You must ask me for a table before you sit down” and on that note, I was ushered back down stairs. Finally found a table downstairs after a couple left which was ideal. Within 5 mins , the same guy was back berating us for bringing in some chocolate treats which hadn’t been opened.(they were just on the table rather than storing them on the floor). This same guy also took a bottle of water off another couple even though they’d bought drinks at the venue. I mean, you go to a pub to relax and drink and within 15 minutes, we’d been told off twice by the guy who was running the door entrance by the computer. This chap is in the wrong trade unfortunately. We’ve done this pub now and from first impressions, have no reason to return. Cheers ! One love .
The food was nice, the service was ok, but we had to wait so long for our main course after we had our starters and our drinks. It was very loud and difficult to have a conversation, sorry to say that we wouldn't return.
We came here two years ago and absolutely loved it, so much so that we wanted to visit again on our return visit to Edinburgh this month. This time it was such a disappointment. The starter was nice but the main courses really did not reflect the expensive price tag. Both mains we ordered were quite underwhelming. I ordered the hake £23 it does not come with a side and as you can see from the picture all you get is a mid-sized piece of fish with some sauce, 2 cherry tomatoes and a few stems of broccoli. I had eaten a small mouthful of the fish and half a tomato before I decided to take this picture! unfortunately we didn’t get a picture of my partner’s main but again, we felt it overpriced. This was our experience and our opinion but each to their own!
