SPACE AGE HISTORY The BEST WESTERN Space Age Lodge and Restaurant were built in 1964/1965. They are a unique and way out place to stay for a good night 's rest, and a great stopping off point to grab a bite to eat. Al Stovall was the original owner and designer of the Space Age, and was inspired in the design by his affiliation with the newly formed Space program. He was the owner of a copper mine and a plastic factory, which offered the opportunity to create special designs and implement a variety of futuristic interior and exterior decorations. Many of the lamps, room dividers, and exterior do-dads were made from materials from his mine and factory. Until the renovation in 1996, three satellite replicas, which were ten foot in diameter, sat upon the roof above the rooms at the lodge. Next to the swimming pool, you can see a replica of the satellites. During Al Stovall 's earlier years, he was the supplier of manganese for the government during World War II. This substance was a rare and vital material used in America 's submarines. This was the beginning of Al 's friendship with the military, and in future years, he served on various boards, along with Dwight Eisenhower. After the Russians launched Sputnik , he was extremely interested in the new NASA program. His collection of astronaut-autographed pictures decorated the walls of the lobby and the restaurant. These were returned to the remaining family members after Al passed away in 1973. New pictures have replaced these, and in addition, hand painted murals enhance the walls. The Lodge and Restaurant were renovated in 1996 by Duke and Carole Fox, partners with the remaining Stovall family. They implemented a newer, sleeker, futuristic design, using modern materials and a unique concept, integrating hand painted murals of outer space on the interior walls of both buildings. The satellites from above the hotel rooms were removed. A spaceship became the focal point of exterior design, landing on top of the lobby. This spaceship is 28 feet in diameter, and 28 feet high. On the inside of the spaceship in the lobby, you will see a three-tiered hand painted mural of outer space. The lobby has additional pictures on display including one of the Mars Rover. A fire destroyed the Restaurant in 1998, but it was quickly rebuilt with a new interior floor plan and a similar exterior design. The ideas and designs generated and implemented over 48 years ago have been updated, but the hopes and dreams behind their creation remain. Offer the guests everything they need for an overnight stay, a beautiful comfortable room, with all the comforts of home, a good clean family style restaurant serving both American and Mexican selections, throw in a unique environment, and the guests will come back, generation after generation. If a room at the lodge is available, ask for a key to look at the remarkably clean and dated décor. The property has High Speed Internet available in all of the rooms, the Lobby, the Restaurant, and the Conference Room. Bring your computer in and catch up on your e-mails. Browse through the GIFT SHOP and purchase some gift items or keepsakes to remind you of your stop at the Home of The Friendliest Aliens (and Humans).
Good diner located in Gila Bend. Not a lot of options for eating so it’s popular. Staff are friendly and courteous with great service. The prices are reasonable for the portion sizes. The decor is fun with an ‘Alien Atmosphere.’ The food was good. Flavorful and served hot. Recommend the Jupiter Burger. Definitely recommend if you are looking for some good American style food and you are passing through town.
The service was good and the food was average. Not bad but not great but better than fast food. The restaurant had a cool ambience quit with its space alien theme. I didn't stay at the motel that by the looks of it they were very clean and nice and next time I passed her there I will stay there. I would recommend both the restaurant and the motel if you are passing by and want to check it out.
Really fun designs on the walls inside. Tons of kitchy type gifts. The food was good and the AC was stout (it was 114 outside . It was a cool diner to stop in at, and my nine year old loved all the space stuff. (So did I!
