You order at the counter and take a seat as they get your food ready. It took about 20 minutes for my food to arrive. My food was good, but may have been better if a little hotter. My fries were good, but also not hot. Should be four stars, but one lost for slow service. I did see the chef come out and help with the backup getting food the the tables. I would give them another try if I was in the area.
Initially, I was skeptical about giving this place a chance and I thought the food would be overpriced since it's associated with Rick Erwin's West End Grill. I was pleasantly surprised by a variety of sandwiches, salads, and dinner entrees for $8 $12. There's also plenty of desserts displayed at the counter, making them hard to miss especially for someone with a sweet tooth like mine. All the cheesecakes and macaroons were sooo tempting! There's tons of indoor and outdoor seating and we were able to catch the sunset as we were having dinner. The food took longer than we expected to come out. That didn't matter after we started eating the food was on point! Cheese ravioli: Sounds plain and simple but in reality, this was some gourmet creamy deliciousness! Comes with five large raviolis in a parm cream sauce with peas and bacon. I had to split this into two meals because the cream sauce did get too heavy for me in the end. This entree comes with a complementary side salad. Gourmet greens: I had this as my side salad and it was so fresh and a great combo of blue cheese, almonds, cranberries and balsamic vinaigrette. Corned beef cabbage: The corned beef was very tender. I only had a few bites of this dish but overall I thought it was savory and tasty! Classic Reuben: So so good!! The corned beef hmm hmm and comes with fries.
This deli had some of the best french fries I've ever had. Fresh, handcut, perfectly seasoned with salt and pepper (among other things), and fried crisp to perfection. We were walking around Falls Park downtown and wanted to find somewhere nearby to stop and grab a bite to eat that was casual since we had been (literally) running around town exploring that morning and didn't feel like we were dressed up enough to go to a sit down restaurant. Rick's was the perfect fit for what we were looking for! This sandwich and salad shop has counter service and plentiful tables inside and out. It's located just a short walk upstairs and across the street from the pedestrian bridge that crosses Reedy River near Main St/Wyche Pavilion. They don't have huge signage on the exterior of their building but the tables full of people dining outside clued us in that we had arrived to the place we were looking for. The menu has lots of hot or cold sandwiches and salads to choose from, both classic and creative offerings that can be customized to your preferences. They had options for sides ranging from chips, french fries, pasta salad, potato salad, coleslaw, etc. The most surprising of their menu offerings however was the beer. They had a handful of *good* beer choices in cans and bottles that were all very reasonably priced. It was about $4-5 for a craft beer. They also serve wine by the glass or bottle. It was nice that their beverage options were clearly displayed in cases so that you could see what they offered. After placing our order we were given a number to display on our table to waitstaff could locate us when our order was ready. We waited at the counter for our drinks thinking we were saving the staff a trip to our table, but they seemed to prefer patrons go ahead and be seated and let them bring things to you. Our food was brought to us in a reasonable amount of time but not extremely quickly. We were splitting the Ribeye Philly Cheesesteak and it looked so good when it arrived that we let the waitstaff walk away before asking for an extra plate. Because servers aren't constantly walking around we did have to help ourselves back where we ordered, but any slight inconvenience of servicing yourself is well worth the delicious food they are busy preparing behind the counter.
I frequent this place with my coworkers a lot for lunch. It's pretty easy, quick, and food is pretty much consistent. My go to is the half rottiserie chicken with a side salad and I know that it's always going to be good. The salad portions are big enough for at least two meals. The fries are always good and seasoned well. You can also order 3 different side items as your meal. And they have different options which are all good. If you're wanting some dessert they have a case with cupcakes and pies. I've never really tried any of the desserts but they look yummy. They tend to get busy during the lunch hour rush but their service is very quick. Parking can be a hassle since they are downtown. There's a parking lot next to them but with very limited space. There's a pay parking garage across the street and I believe the first hour is free.
While the food is great and it's one of the few quick lunch spots downtown, the employees ALWAYS have attitudes! I mean I've genuinely never been here and dealt with a friendly person. It's also a little off putting that the bread is stored right outside the bathrooms...
