You can buy cheese with the Hilmar label in their factory business in Central California, but most of their cheese has other private, regional and national trademarks. It is likely that you will find it on pizza and in other restaurant food and you will find that it is repackaged and sold by the pound in grocery stores.
Cheese Chowder is an attempt when in Hilmar. I went here a day from the clinic and found the visitor centre very sweet. You can see that cheese is made in the factory above and they have a beautiful area for children, but the main attraction is the deli. The gift shop area has a lot of cheese from Hilmar, but there is also a case with local artesian cheese. Crazy, it's amazing. Beyond the gift shops and ice area is a deli. This is a place. The sandwiches are thick, not at all. The ingredients are top notch. The breads taste fresh. My friend ordered one of the Deli sandwiches and I would have it, but it was Friday during Lent, so no meat for me. I ordered the cheese case and it was great. Unfortunately, I was halfway down when I found all the potatoes, cheese dumps and BACON on the ground, so there was no meat killed. I added him a hot sauce to give it a little kick, but for a cool morning, that was perfect. Then I continued my meal with a big caprese salad. It was delicious. Of course, the cheese here is the star of the show. I'll go back to LA this weekend to eat more soup and enjoy a slice of cheesecake recommended by the participant. I could even get a sandwich to go on a trip later.
GREAT DELI!. Loves the food in Deli. I recommend trying the Cheedar Cheese Chowder! Great.
My husband and I enjoyed a day here before pandemic. The cheese-chowder was amazing, and while the café was busy, it was not crowded. The staff was wonderful and very professional. All in all, it was a great place to visit.
Not bad. They don't do guided tours during the afternoon so most likely you won't get a guided tour. However, you can still wander around the gift shop/cafe and the upstairs area on your own. There is also a park like area outside which is nice. There are free cheese samples but they were mostly out of cheese when I was there. Upstairs, there are some interesting things to check out and an area where you can see people working in the factory. The upstairs room is mostly geared towards children but still enjoyable for teens and adults.
