While we give kudos to the Black Sheep for offering some evening entertainment, the actual show was pretty average. Headliner was funny, acts leading up to him (over an hour of them) were lacklustre. Atmosphere is a dark damp old pub, service wasn't great.
We ate at the adjoining restaurant service was very relaxed which was fine but the ribs were very fatty fried were great
Very good burgers and poutine. The nachos were also very good as were the sweet potato fries. Can’t say the same for the entertainment the night we were there. Royal Oak was depressing.
This family owned pub smokes its meat and offers an interesting array of barbecue sauces and garnishes. Relaxing atmosphere. Owner gives detailed answers to all menu queries.
We bought tickets to see Maria Doyle Kennedy. We hadn’t been there before, so we went early. The Black Sheep doesn’t have a kitchen. A different business (Bistro Rutherford) in the building serves BBQ food on the outdoor patio. The Black Sheep serves the drinks. The servers for both businesses were great. The outdoor tables and chairs needed a good cleaning. The food was OK. The 1/2 rack of ribs was large, but partly because of the high fat content of the meat. The sauce was very thick and not very flavourful. The washrooms were gross. Tiny, dirty, no water pressure. The bar area was crowded, uncomfortably hot and very loud for the 90 minutes leading up to the show. The bar selection is quite limited. We went back outside because the evening was so pleasant. When the show was about to start, they closed all the patio doors and pulled heavy drapes across. Perhaps they were trying to prevent people who hadn’t paid from enjoying the show. The outdoor roofline lights were turned on which drew lots of bugs and clearly emphasized the huge spider webs full of dead bugs. Rather than go back inside, we left.
