Swamp Cafe - Launceston

Just popped in for a bite of lunch. Friendly staff, good coffee and warm place to sit. Not fine cuisine but reasonably priced and hubbie would recommend the all day Eggs Benedict. Lots of cake/slice options so a good place for a catch up in a part of town where options are a bit limited.

Our first visit to Swamp Café. It was busy so that is a good sign of a good café and we were impressed too. The sweets in the display cabinet were all home made and looked delicious, and the prices are most reasonable. The two sweets we ate were certainly delicious. Our cappuccinos were excellent and everything was prepared and served quickly. Table water and glasses are available and the staff are friendly and know how to smile. We would be happy to visit again.

Service was "interesting". First server ignored me as she pulled cash from the till and counted it directly in front of me. At 6'2" I'm quite hard to miss. After then taking my whole order, she called another staff member to then retake the exact same order?Make no mistake, the coffee was GREAT, perfect temperature for drinking and full of flavour.But then the food...oh dear. "Chicken" BLT consisted of an odd bread-type slice of stodge on the bottom, a mishmash of leaves that seems to pass as "lettuce" in most places these days (PLEASE go back to fresh, crisp Cos) topped with a slightly charred thing that we guessed was supposed to represent the chicken component. Truly awful texture, bizarre flavour and particularly unappealing odour. It wasn't an aroma...it was definitely an odour. I did eat most of it, struggling the whole time, in an effort to ascertain exactly what it was. In the end, I remained unsure if it was a reformed lump of mechanically recovered "meat" or a hugely over-marinated piece of breast. Either way it was clearly false advertising to describe it as "Chicken" as it was singularly lacking in any attribute that chicken generally possesses, particularly chicken flavour.On top of this fowl mockery was some well-cooked and tasty bacon (the easy stand out of the dish) and some slices of acceptable quality tomato.The whole towering confusion was then very liberally squeeze-bottled with generic mayonnaise. Leaning somewhat forlornly against this terrific tower was another piece of the bread-like substance that also lurked below.The erection of this "sandwich" in a slanted tower of individual ingredients made it near impossible to combine more than one or two ingredients together, which to me is the essence of a good sandwich, particularly a BLT. Simple, tasty, flavourful and fresh, all in one bite...something that this basket-case was absolutely NOT.But, the coffee was good.

Lovely friendly staff - great menu with awesome breakfast options. Coffee is a great blend, perfectly made and satisfying.

This is a meeting place for locals, friends, & business people. Nothing flash. Simple decor, with lovely staff. Food is good, coffee is great, the Beaconsfield bread .... scrumptious.
