Im Romer - Mayen

My husband and I decided to spend a weekend in the region and after the positive reviews we decided to try this place. The service was perfect. They were fully booked for the evening, but they went out their way to make room for us, and were always really friendly. We sung out on the market street and it was nice to see how people come and go. Many of the other customers were local regular, also a very good sign! And the food: excellent! The absolutely best sülze I tried in Germany! And beautiful local wine to go with it: So in the end, well earned 5 stars!

Bottom line: such a good experience that I decided to award five stars. Also, they know about celiac disease and gluten. See, I try to not give out the five star rating too often, because it makes five stars less special if there 's too many of them. On the other hand, I find the gap between the word average for three stars, and very good for four stars to be quite large, with the result being that I award lots of four stars because average does not do a lot of 3 star places justice. Still, I decided to give this place five stars, because as a visitor to Mayen, you should be aware of this place. First off, the location: Marktstrasse, right in the center of Mayen, surrounded by nice fachwerk houses. Just strolling around here is probably part of the reason why you even decided to come to this region. Interior: this is a very traditional establishment. There 's wooden tables and chairs of the type that your grandparents have, the type you cannot buy at IKEA, which looks like it will last longer than your own mortal coil. It 's cosy. It 's also popular, because we couldn 't be seated during our first visit, and when we came back the next day, we could only be seated if we shared a table with other visitors. For us, this was no problem because us not being German makes it easier to ignore other people 's conversations. Nonetheless, the other people were very friendly because when I dropped a fork, the German guy at my table asked the waiter for a new fork in German, out of his own initiative. This is one of those places where new visitors go around the tables to shake hands with almost everybody else a place where the town notables come and hang out. Lots of grey hair, but that matches the traditional interior anyways. Food: everything was super traditional. My dish was just baked potatoes with mushrooms that happened to be in season, and there was a small side salad. Still, it was excellent! Elegance in simplicity. I 'd definitely go back there if I were ever in Mayen again (which will probably happen because there 's so many hiking trails (Traumpfade in the vicinity . Gluten: the waitress understood what kind of food we weren 't allowed to eat, and she did not bring us bread as a starter (we got more side salad . It 's always kind of a bummer when you tell a waiter you 're celiac, and then they still bring you bread... Then, when the pan fried fish arrived, we were worried because it looked breaded! It wasn 't, though: it was baked in butter at a very high temperature, so the fish developed a golden crust just from the butter and from its own protein. Amazing (though not something for everyday if you care about cholesterol, maybe; but that 's German cuisine for you . The waitress said we 'd rather keep you above the table than have you fall underneath it due to allergies. This small joke did make us feel more safe, and as fellow celiacs will appreciate, the feeling of security is quite important if you 're a celiac who 's eating out. They serve a bunch of local beers, which is always a pleasure to explore (note for nitpickers: the beers weren 't gluten free, but not all of us required that diet, so we could still enjoy beers. In the end, the bill was so low that we thought they forgot to add stuff. I 'd definitely recommend this place, and suggest you pick it if you only have one evening to spend in Mayen.

Best restaurant in Mayen/Rheinlandpfalz for a traditional/new German cuisine. I had polcher asparagus with salt potatoes and a sliced calf carving with a drop of lemon. Millions de delicious!

After I haven't visited the Roemer for a long time, I'm happy to eat here again. The local food is excellent, the volcano beer is great and I spent a great night here again. The staff is helpful and polite and the kitchen... perfect for local dishes. Your menu includes seasonal dishes as well as Eifel classics and I really recommend eating there. But be aware of the need to reserve a table in advance. Because it is scenic, it is always almost completely booked.
