First through the door on a Friday morning after an hour drive and in the necessity of a fry up, it really hit the place.
A pleasant little caffe that looked away a small side street were first impressions that it looked a bit basic, more of a builder café than a trendy coffee shop. that may be a little unfair, but it depends on who you approach. when we come across the terrace, there is an interesting wooden facade in the middle floor, almost like an alpine ski hut. the waitress seemed very cheerful and called hallo as soon as we entered. we were only there for a coffee and a cake, although the menu is a series of larger dressed like omelettes, burger, sandwiches and so on. the cakes were displayed in a glass cabinet on the theke and all looked quite tempting, although with only three of four, from there to choose was certainly a smaller choice than many places. what was considered as a victoria sponge was described as a lemon choke cake (usually these are rather lengthy than round, and I have never seen one with a layer butter cream in the middle before) and another looked very tempting with some kind of syrup only oozing out of it, but the vegan harvested cake description sounded somewhat less inspiring. at the end the lemon cake was very good, nicely moist and the cream layer added an extra hot sweet. A coffee and walnut cake was also very good in the did, again quite on the sweet side maybe, but this is not a bad thing. the sizes were a little on the small side. a latte was ok, although nothing special, I certainly had a lot of tasty. I'm not a fan of strong coffee, but this seemed simple, much in the kind of taste ever missing. over the table was a pot green tea again nothing protruding, with the pot was only enough for a cup instead of the usual two. the prices were very reasonable, although the two cakes and two hot drinks come around, while in most places it would be at least a tens so that apologises the somewhat smaller portions. overall, while this may not be the most attractive option around looking the decent cake, good value and friendly service means that I will be happy to come back next time I am in wells.
After a disappointing morning trying to find a dog friendly cafe we chanced upon the Spinning Wheel. So pleased we did. Very warm welcome from the hosts was followed by a ‘small’ breakfast which filled the plate. Beautifully prepared and presented with good quality sausages...and bacon and a very tasty hash brown washed down with one of the best prepared Lattes we have had in a long while. Worth seeking out, we’ll definitely be back.
Back street cafe very friendly clean staff very helpful food very good if I came back to wells. would come back here for lunch
