We had a menu as part of the walk. Saving soup to die for followed by a pasta with bolognese sauce and small vegetables that sublime. then a cupcake that was as good as anyone I had.
I wish there were more of them in France in rural areas. good eating, friendly service, attention to simple details. and an amazing apple cake (bravo patrick!
The four of us were hiking Way of St. James and were extremely tired by the time we reached Monistrol, with another 6 miles to go before our intended destination. We happened to be discussing what to do just outside this hotel, when the proprietor...Peter popped his head out of the door and chatted with us in English. He made several suggestions and then even made arrangements for our onward journey that turned out to be extremely helpful!! We ended up staying the night at the attached hotel and eating dinner in the restaurant. About the latter: Peter sources as much of his food locally as he can, and it was all delicious and beautifully presented, and very reasonably priced. We KNOW he sources locally because on the next day's hike our friends stopped at a farm for a snack, and who should show up but Peter, to pick up some local cheese! Peter's French staff are all super attentive and friendly, too. It all made for a one-of-a-kind travel memory that we will cherish.
A small, unpretentious hotel restaurant overlooking the river Allier, Le Pain de Sucre served us a first-rate, 3-course lunch for €17 per head (wine extra) which was well-thought-out, well-presented and tasty. Which make it rather a rarity in France these days.
