São Miguel - Nazare

Nazaré, Portugal is a sight to behold, and in a cove with high cliffs bordering on the north. At the northwest point is an old fort atop the cliff. Restaurant Sao Miguel sits on the beach overlooking the waves and cliffs...quite picturesque. We shared a paella, which was excellent and plentiful. Larger seafood pieces were in the paella than we were used to, like two half lobsters and huge whole prawns. Service was very good, and matched the food and venue for our most excellent lunch.

Besides its location and proximity to the ocean, this beautiful restaurant boasts an array of dishes on their menu of which many are typical of the town’s tradition. Favourites such as fish and seafood dishes are often ordered and are highly recommended by the waite-staff. The view is remarkable, the atmosphere is pleasant and your meal will leave you wanting to return. Nazare has many great restaurants – S. Miguel is outstanding.

Our tour group stopped here in Nazare on our way from Lisbon to Porto, and our 100+ travelers took over the restaurant. They were well set up for a group lunch, and the food started coming right away. We had huge fresh bread loaves, bottles of Portuguese red and white wine on the tables, and bottles of water. We started with a hot soup, then a salad and a huge filet of fried cod (flounder) with vegetables. Chocolate/vanilla ice cream was served for dessert. The portions were generous, and everyone was satisfied with the food and wine. We also enjoyed the panoramic view from this restaurant at the end of the beach as well as the nice walk after lunch back to the buses. There may have been a little napping on the bus that afternoon...
