On May 1, 2019, for the first time since the Great East Japan Earthquake, I visited Oofunato City in Iwate Prefecture. I had heard on TV that small combined facilities like restaurants were opening, and the town was indeed beautiful. Many shops were closed on this day, but the Sanriku Seafood Factory was bustling with customers. Although the seafood bowl priced at 1680 yen seemed expensive, I decided to order it instead of opting for a cheaper fried food set because I didn't want to regret it later. In the past, I have often been disappointed as the actual dishes didn't match the photos on the menu, but this time I was not let down. The seafood bowl was packed with fresh sashimi, shrimp, scallops, and salmon roe so much so that the rice underneath was almost hidden. The salmon roe was big, shiny, and had a delightful texture. The tea, rice, fish head soup, and small dishes were self-service, allowing for free refills and extras. Vinegar was also provided, so you could make your own sushi rice and even buy your favorite sashimi from the seafood market on the same floor. For just around 300 yen, you could order a rice set and enjoy your own original seafood bowl or sashimi set!
