The weights can be a little long, but the restaurant is big, and they have a lot of tables. The service is friendly and efficient and as accommodation for big parties as they can be. I had the reubs. It was delicious. I wish I had more time in town to eat here.
We enjoyed the outdoors, in their ample patio seating area as their menus and takeout containers blew all over the place during a rain, hail, and wind storm. It was a crazy storm that dropped the temp from 85 to 60, but their soup and sandwiches warmed us right up. The French dip was lean beef on a hearty baguette with fry circles and the half sandwich with soup is available day and night. We almost wore our neighbor's leftovers as they flew off their table, across ours and off into the Palm Springs void that was the storm. The patio does have heaters, which helped us look less cold as those who dined inside look upon our less than advantageous choice for deli dinner al fresco. As my empty beer bottle and my partner's wine glass became unstable objects like everything else that wasn't tied down, we devoted one hand to potential projectiles and the other to their tasty black and white cookies made fresh daily. Just before we paid our check and strategically place the tip, in cash, under a hefty pile of condiments, we ordered a couple bagels and cream cheese for the next day's breakfast, which made for a great travel companion on our way out of town. Not one dull moment or flavor at Sherman's. We highly recommend it, especially during those rare weather events in the desert.
My partner and his family would not stop talking about this place and I had to check it out for myself. Let me tell you, it lives up to the hype. I had the ribs and they were fall off the bone delicious, but the brisket is also a sure winner! Didn't get a chance to try the cinnamon roll but the creme puff was amazing and HUGE!
Sherman's Dell and Bakery was a treasure! Marti was our waitress and she was absolutely on top of everything. She refilled drinks at just the right time, cleared away dishes, and gave us hints about local things of interest to us while spending just the right amount of time at our table. I ordered the Ortega Omelette. It was delicious! I was worried it would be too spicy, but it was very mild. My family mostly ordered breakfast, which was of reasonable proportions. If you want sandwiches, though, be ready. The amount of pastrami we saw on some of the sandwiches would definitely be more than a meal for most! Every table gets an appetizer plate of pickles! Wish we were there longer to enjoy the dessert menu. It was extensive and a clear draw for customers. Looking around the decor inside, you will see many legendary stars with signed photos that make the restaurant that much more interesting. Indoor and outdoor seating available! It looked packed, but we got right in and the service was quick! We'd go back!
It's the real deal of an old fashion deli, but don't let their food theater fool you by piling most of the meat on some of their sandwiches towards the cut edge of the bread to make it look like it's a lot more than it truly is. Don't get me wrong, the overall portion is very good sized, but it's not quite as humongous as it might appear. What's interesting about the place is, that it's also a bakery too. You don't usually see these two different types of foods combined on one restaurant, and the good news is, they do both of them quite well. When back in town, I will surely return for another sandwich and other treats.
