TRAVEL DIARIES : 20.03.2021SOLACE SPA AND RESORTSIn a mood to explore the not so frequented resorts, we hit the highway, driving 25 kms to this resort and spa appropriately named Solace.Exiting the highway, drove on a narrow road meandering through comatose villages, temples, agricultural fields and forests, reaching the high gates to the resort, bang in the midst of a Bamboo forest with colourful bougainvillea breaking the monotony. What was intended as a day trip turned into overnight stay, a spot decision, only to regret later. The 33 acre property has fallen to shambles since the lockdown and way below what we had expected based on photos and reviews. A lesson learnt, never to be persuaded by sweet sales talk. Add to that the overly warm welcome by the Manager, stretching out to please us and making good for what was lacking in terms of amenities and comfort. The staff bent backwards to accommodate all our requests. Under the circumstances, felt it would be uncharitable to walk away.At the most a three star slipped down to two, post Covid. But without a doubt, a beautiful property with potential to make big bucks, specially with lots of outdoor activities in place, still in embryonic state. Mask rule not followed. Restaurant wasn't functioning. Meals were ordered from local eating places and served in the room. Not what we had reckoned. Wifi a distant dream. Power and water supply erratic, with no power back up. A trip that went awry, right from the start. And we fell into the trap neatly laid out by the property Manager Mr Prithvi Gowda reassuring us on phone that the place was functional and guests had started visiting. All hogwash! What can the guy do with the crumbling infrastructure and with ten staff attending to multifarious activities? Tariff with breakfast not all that cheap, when comparing with Taj offering premium room with pool view at a lower rate.Only brownie point earned by the resort was the constant response and Mr Prithvi Gowda's zest to attend and rectify every ticket raised. Hopefully we will return once the place is renovated and running on well oiled wheels. That's a sure thing!Snigdha Agrawal21st March, 2021
