Perhaps they should consider changing the name of the pub to "The Allotment," as it seems to be full of vegetables. Additionally, the prices of drinks are exorbitant. I would recommend avoiding this place.
We popped in after the Depeche Mode concert at Twickenham Stadium around 10:45. There was a DJ playing 80’s classics, some friendly locals and staff and a great drinks selection at reasonable prices. As more and more people arrived from the concert the DJ started playing Depeche Mode tracks and it soon became an unofficial after party. A great end to the night.
There was no atmosphere in the dining area. I went for a roast lunch, but the menu only had two roast options, as well as fish and chips and a vegetable option. There wasn't much choice. I ordered the roast chicken, which was half a chicken, but the meat was dry and hard. I tried to improve it with gravy, but the gravy was tasteless. The dish was supposed to come with broccoli, carrots, parsnips, and potatoes, but the portions were small and the vegetables didn't seem fresh. Unfortunately, I won't be returning to this restaurant.
Despite making a reservation in advance and receiving confirmation, as well as placing food orders for a group of 4, the restaurant could not locate our booking. It was a frustrating start to our experience. Even after showing our confirmation email, the staff seemed skeptical but eventually seated us. However, it took over 1 hour and 45 minutes for our meals to arrive, and we never received our dessert despite paying for a 3-course set menu. When we raised this issue, one staff member tried to apologize but was interrupted by a colleague who claimed there was nothing they could do and that we were lucky to be accommodated in the first place. This attitude was unacceptable, especially considering the prices of the food. One member of our group even found plastic wrap from the lamb shank on his plate, indicating that the meat may have been cooked in the plastic. Overall, this experience was disappointing, especially since the restaurant is typically known for good service.
We have been going to Admiral Nelson for years for pre rugby games and have never left anything other than five star reviews. Unfortunately, unless they change their menue we will not be coming back. Firstly, the price was hiked a massive 60% (that is on top of the expected and reasonable price increases for being a rugby day) the set menu in a Fullers pub is now more expensive that, say, Benares which hold a Michelin Star and have three courses inclusing a wine pairing. Bonkers. Next, the food. The choice was really narrow and not the right sort. The portions were small again, really poor value. Then I found large piece of melted plastic in my dish (from the end of the lamb shank) so clearly these are mass produced ordered in dishes. It also made the dish taste of melted platic. The starters were, being generous, average at best and the deserts were devoid of taste and the sponges were dry. So, in summary, Hayley and the girls out front worked their socks off and were great as usual but the kitchen is trying to pretend to be something it clearly isn't which is a massive shame.
