Both locals and tourists are familiar with Rosedale Red Rose, a fantastic fish and chip shop that offers plenty of seating options as well as takeaway service. The menu has a wide variety of options including steamed, fried, or grilled dishes, all freshly prepared while you wait. The staff are friendly and helpful, willing to assist with any request. I visit this place at least once a week to enjoy their delicious fish, potato cakes, and assortment of drinks and desserts. They have magazines to read while you wait, or you can chat with friends and family. Wheelchair accessibility depends on the type of wheelchair you have, as some may not be able to navigate the step at the entrance. However, the staff are accommodating and will take your order even if you have to wait outside.
It was Friday night and I was looking forward to relaxing, watching the football, and not having to cook. I tried calling the restaurant at 7:30 pm to place an order, but there was no answer. I called again at 7:35 pm with the same result. At 7:40 pm, the phone went straight to a busy line. By 7:45 pm, I still hadn't gotten through. I decided to drive to the restaurant and arrived at 7:50 pm to find workers inside around the counter. Despite a sign on the door saying the shop closed at 8:00 pm, right next to the opening hours at 20:00, the staff seemed unbothered. Two other cars pulled up, saw the sign and the staff inside, and drove off within the brief time I was there. It's understandable if business is slow and the shop shuts early, but to ignore phone calls for 30 minutes while being present at the counter, and then not offering an explanation for closing early is disappointing. This experience, combined with receiving two lamb souvas the other day that were poorly presented and made both myself and my partner feel sick for the next 12 hours, leads me to advise against dining at Red Rose.
The chips are the best; the flake was awesome; my husband loved his hamburger with the lot; and our kids loved their dimsims. Service was friendly and helpful. The batter on the flake was light and nothing was greasy. Yum. (We saw there was a for sale sign in the window so I hope whoever buys the business is as friendly and able to cook the fish chips as good.
Stopped here on the way through for a quick lunch, delicious souvlakis and chips. Great little takeaway shop and small area for dining in if you wish.
