I have a shrimp allergy, so my tempura bowl did not have shrimp on it, although it usually does. The udon was simple with green onions on top. The noodles had a salty taste and were firm. The broth had a strong flavor and was comforting. The tempura bowl had shiso, carrots, eggplant, pumpkin, and (shrimp) on top. The chewy white rice with sweet sauce was delicious. The prices may seem high, but when you consider that you can eat serious and delicious udon here, the price doesn't seem that high. I recommend stopping by this shop when you visit Usuki. It may take a bit longer to prepare your order, so it's better to come with some extra time.
Recently, the buckwheat noodles are made with 100% buckwheat. It seems that there has been a lot of effort put into improving the way the udon noodles are made, taking three years to perfect. The head chef, a lean and muscular man, kindly revealed his age to me, but he did not look a day over 70; he was very sharp and energetic. Today, I had the udon noodles. They were not too firm, but had a good texture. I am thinking of going back again. Next time, I would like to try the 100% buckwheat noodles.
It has been about 5 years since my last visit, and the deliciousness remains the same. The noodles are firm and have a deep flavor without any additives. The tempura on the side is freshly fried, and the freshly grated udon noodles are also recommended.
