Myself and husband visited this cafe after coming to Dartmouth via the steam railway. We were allocated a table and given a menu to look at. The young girl serving/waiting and obviously general help was very efficient. We requested a sandwich and a bowl of chips with curry sauce. I can’t eat a whole sandwich so we asked for one to share. We were told in no uncertain terms that no we had to have a meal each along with a drink each. We were like WTF! Never have we been told that in any cafe/restaurant .. regardless of it being in the UK or abroad. What a ridiculous and money grabbing scheme this is. The sandwich’s we ordered were very nice and hubby enjoyed the curry sauce with his chips. Not a lot of choice of hot drinks, hubby cannot have dairy so tea/coffee was out of the question. No green tea (his preferred hot drink)!so he settled for a sprite. We have visited this cafe on other occasions in the past and were more than happy with the good service and tasty food. However, on our next trip to Dartmouth I feel we won’t be going back. Disappointed. What should have been around £10 was nearly £30… for 2 sandwiches, 2 drinks and some chips curry sauce.
View of cafe tables may give some indication of house keeping and cleanliness of this restaurant.. eat here at your peril..!
Got off the Torquay to Dartmouth day cruise and had a little time to browse around before return journey, feeling peckish so went in and ordered a baked potato and a pot of tea, a tuna sandwich on white bread (it was served on brown but we said nothing until payment) and a milkshake £22.50. Nothing wrong with the service the girl was very pleasant and it was nice to eat in but looking round the rest of the town indicted to us we should have done just that before we sat down
Myself and my partner have unfortunately been into a cafe that pretends it’s a fish and chip shop. They call it Skippers in Dartmouth. I have food allergies so I asked the young girl what they use to cook the chips/ batter in. I asked if the potatoes were fresh. Yes I was told, turns out they were bought in as I could see two blue bags of chips one on the top of a fryer and one on the floor. They chips were absolutely tasteless but the fish was bearable but you had to put a lot of salt and vinegar on to eat it. There again no flavour whatsoever. The hygiene practices were quite questionable, one young girl wearing a mask to take your order but the young girl serving outside not wearing one. Also I saw something spilt on the floor and wiped up and the cloth put back on the side! Yuck!! They didn’t always use hand sanitizer, you could see they didn’t really care. The whole place has such a bad vibe, you feel drained in there. It has bad energy! The boss is totally ignorant, you can see how he is with the staff let alone customers. He doesn’t interact with you, just orders the poor young girls around, who look quite scared of him frankly. The guy who does the cooking was on a break when my partner and I were shown to a table. He is also ignorant, miserable looking like they are waiting to see the executioner,he said I can’t hear you when I was complaining and didn’t even move from the cooking area, there again ignorant! when we were paying I said actually I’m not happy as I did ask about the chips being freshly cut as I have allergies, he said if you want that you need to go next door, referring to a fish and chip shop that wasn’t open. He made a face and said we are a cafe! We paid half price as this was on the Eat out to help out deal but REALLY even Dick Turpin wore a mask! So if you’re in Dartmouth and you see SKIPPERS please just walk on by!
