Hard, good service these days seems, but we ate here 29/22 August and have to say we were pleasantly surprised! We sat next to a table with four ladies and they had no luck with eating there, but the server and...manger tried their best to please them, sometimes there is no desire. We had the same server his name was KYLE and he was very informative about the menu and took care of our order right. I seldom ordered the steak meduim and there was more medium, so I mentioned that to him, as a conversation at all, not complaining. When we were ready to go, they brought me another steak dinner that was delicious to go. I told him they did it, but he insisted. Thank you. People who give us a wonderful anniversary dinner will be back.
Quality controls were not available for starters over 2 hours. The restaurant was almost completely empty and there was a waiting time. dirty tables sat for 45 or more minutes instead of being cleaned
There were 10 of us for dinner. It was too loud for the conversation. One in our party had a cochlear implant, so I asked that the music be turned off a little. It might have been shut down half a notch, hard to say... it didn't make much difference. Many of us had the Memphis Steak. My steak was good, not great... most of the medium rarely ordered medium. The baked potatoes seemed like they were reheated so often that they were dried out. They were completely covered with salt and made the skin unusable. (I have a picture) I usually like eating the whole potato skin and everything. The interior was so dry that there was not much potato at all. The people who had Pommes couldn't eat them because they were covered with salt. What about it?! The (seasonal vegetables) green beans were fine. A bottle of wine was ordered and placed before the person! Isn't it normal that the server pours the first glass? I never had it in a restaurant. And why did people have to ask for water? Shouldn't it just be served to everyone? I constantly asked a server for water. After our application (which were good) the dishes and some corners were left in the middle of the table for a while. When our meals came, there was only one steak knife placed on the plate, not a clean fork. We used them to share and eat the appies. Some people took a random fork from the dirty dishes, I asked for a clean one. It never showed up. I finally got up and took one from another table. It seemed to be a lot of staff, but they were busy singing a lot of happy birthday (at least 4) In our party there were 5 people from the province. I know we were able to speak at that time, but we were happy to have the company and did not want the food, etc. to be the focus of our time together.
I visited Jack Astor's as part of a group of 20 as it was the only restaurant able to accommodate so many of us at short notice. When we arrived at 8pm, the table had not been set up and when it was, it was...on uncomfortable high chairs and we had to sit in two separate groups. Four members of our party wanted to order a dish fish and chips and were told it was sold out, without any advice from the servers as to why or what other dishes might be an alternative choice. When a second choice was made by two of our party members, a waitress came back and explained they were also sold out of THAT dish as well. One party member asked if a dish they were ordering was spicy and they were told it wasn't. When it arrived, it was extremely spicy. Another member of our party received their burger and it was burnt to a crisp, so they sent it back. However, to top off the experience, it was far, FAR too loud. There was a DJ playing club music which no one was dancing to or engaging with. The bar was also bare of any people. There wasn't even any escape from the noise in the toilets as loud music was playing in THERE, too!! The only saving grace were the amusing cartoons on the wall. With unattentive staff, poor food choices and a noisy environment I would advise dining somewhere else in St Johns if you want to have a proper sit down dinner.
