My boyfriend and I came here at 5 p.m. for dinner between flights, and we ordered the Monk Burger and Crab Mac & Cheese. We ate at 5:20, food was timely. For a bit of background, my boyfriend is a 1st year apprentice in cooking and cooked for a very reputable and busy restaurant in our home city before we moved. I too worked for said restaurant as a server, bartender and occasionally a cook. He ordered the burger and felt it was unacceptable for the pickled onions were 'leaking' their colour (supposed to be completely pink, but were mostly white) and tasted raw. This seemed odd as I have never seen a pickled onion loose its colouring, or only be half pickled. There was a chunk of chicken strip in his fries, and his burger had a strong charcoal flavour to it - too much for a burger at least. His first beer was flat, but replaced. All of this combined turned him off from his meal and he didn't finish. It appeared his meal lacked attention and care/detail, especially for the price. My Crab Mac & Cheese tasted good, though I didn't finish as I started to feel like there might be some lack of attention in preparing the food here. Our server never did a quality check or asked if we needed anything. He also never refilled my drink causing another reason I didn't finish as I was too thirsty, making it uncomfortable to eat. I was done my drink at the starting of our meal, and watched as he visited the table next to us 5 times (and counted) before he finally came back to take our plates away, 25 minutes later of being forgotten I suppose. The manager took the burger and my drink off the tab, which was appreciated. We left at 5:45 and not even 15 minutes later my stomach was cramping and I had a sharp pain. Not long thereafter and I was off to the bathroom, I'm sure you can imagine why. My partner had a worse card dealt to him as our flight at 6:20 was accompanied by ice bags and ginger ale compliments of the attendants for his sweating and stomach pain. He too was then off to the bathroom to actually throw up halfway through our flight. Though I understand maybe our bodies just disagreed with the food, I have a hard time believing that as we ate light that day so we could have a good meal at the airport. The lack of attention, service and care is why I would not recommend coming here and why we will not return. We have warned a few YVR regulars about our experience.
Very limited places to eat in the terminal, so gave this a try, since I was starving! The price for a grilled cheese was almost $30 and I am pretty sure it was made with cheesewiz and wonder bread! Nasty! Not worth your money! Keep walking!
My wife and I had a couple of hours to kill between flights, as well as appetites to satisfy. Monk's Grill was something of a random choice but we were glad of the choice we made.I had the grilled ham & cheese sandwich, my wife had the prime-rib dip, both with side Caesar salads...and both were excellent, to the extent that she told me to post a 5-star review!
Been here several times. First, it is a bit pricey - but you are in a airport. Food is decent -- service is good -- bar is good. Usually have a Stella and a burger -- no complaints. Keep your expectations in check, and you will be satisfied.
