It's upstairs above the Manly Wharf bar in the heart of the action and lucky for me I visited on a perfect Sydney Sunday afternoon just before sunset! After dining in three other Sake restaurants The Rocks, Double Bay and Flinders Lane, I must say the designers/architects have knocked it out of the park with this stunning restaurant! Enter from the wharf side for the full visual impact. The space is vast with so many options of where to sit; inside or out, at the sushi bar or the cocktail bar, next to the zen garden, a booth, a private room. You could dine here ten times and sit somewhere and have a totally different experience each time. Oh, there's a good idea! Started with a gorgeous Geisha Good Times from their signature cocktail list! Delicious! Following this ordered a myriad of Sake favourites to get the party started. Sashimi cones, edamame, shrimp tempura roll, spider maki, bug tail tempura and chicken karage were all excellent choices! With summer and pre Xmas functions just around the corner, I can only imagine staff will need to be fully prepared for the hordes of excited diners ready to rush in!
It always bothers me when a successful restaurant decides to expand, but Sake seems to have pulled it off. It's excellent sushi with great atmosphere next to the water at Manly. Anything from the sushi bar will keep you happy, while there's makimono rolls like the Red Samurai of spicy tuna, avocado cream and green chilli to demonstrate that there's more than the average sushi joint going on here. Try the signature dishes for something special. Four stars.
SAKÉ Manly was not without faults but the view, the service and the technical expertise of the modern Japanese food ensures this will make my Top 20 Restaurants of 2018. It just slipped in being the last venue I dined at before the NYE celebrations. Saké Manly is a special occasion restaurant, no normal person can regularly afford a meal this expensive but I do look forward to returning.
