Came here on a whim when a friend of a friend was DJing. The wine list is a dream.... the food is INSANELY DELICIOUS. I am so obsessed with the rice cakes that I'm going back tomorrow to try it again and have more. Mmmm... I need to know where to buy the Korean mayo. I've never had such deliciousness in my life. This place rocks! And the staff were so friendly :
I visited Uncle Mikey's on a whim on a random Friday night, and I'm very glad I did! Styled after a bodega, Uncle Mikey's is a casual hang that's actually very reminiscent of a bar you would find in the streets of Seoul. You're sitting on milk cartons and having your beverages under the warm glow of neon lights. It was conducive to conversation and felt intimate while maintaining a casual atmosphere. I had a taste of the chicken wings and stir fried glass noodles jap chae, for those that are familiar with Korean menus . They deviate slightly from the standard recipes you would expect from a sit down Korean restaurant. For example, the glass noodles have a Thai curry flavour and is heavier and more filling than the side dish you would expect to get at Bloor and Bathurst. Both were very good and I'll be trying other dishes when I inevitably visit again. Fun fact: there's a gigantic neon sign that says SOJU in Korean when you enter Uncle Mikey's, but there actually isn't soju on the menu as of yet . We asked our server if they have a bottle in the back, and they actually did! I thought that was a little bit of false advertisement, but I got what I wanted, so ¯\ ツ ¯. Regardless, I had a great time at Uncle Mikey's and I'll definitely be back!
The wife and I popped in on Sunday and tried a few of the dishes, the standouts for us were the Raw beef and Shrimp dishes. The raw beef is served with a heaping amount it spring onions and fresh herbs on it, seasoned perfectly and bursting with flavour, I was very surprised at how good that dish was, I look forward to having it again. The shrimp tasted great as well, nice garlic flavour to it. The shrimp are not peeled and at first I thought it would have been an issue but they are fried nicely and once you chew it nicely its not an issue to swallow. Solid spot with some good, food, I look forward to trying more dishes.
This is a fantastic spot to grab a drink at! We stepped out of a gallery party to find a bottle shop on the Dundas strip and Uncle Mikey's turned out to be the perfect spot, especially since my friend is Korean. They have a few items on a cheesy poster menu plastered on the plexiglass covid cough shield greeting you as you breeze in the place. The poster has BODEGA, which is Spanish for small boutique, grocery store, or depanneur if you're in Canada. Kimchi, K food, BottleShop... kind of everything you need when out partying like we were on a Friday night. The signature item was a Bulgogi Hanger Steak for 28 which sounded pretty good but was sold out. Also we were there for bottles, not food. And Uncle Mikey did not disappoint to that end. A fully stocked front room with a couple fridges containing interesting things like home made kimchi, imported asian sweets, snack food, and plenty of beers I have never seen before anywhere else. Very cool! The staff was super chill, and very nice to deal with almost reading our minds standing there gob smacked. Would you like your to go bottle of Saison opened? Why yes, of course! How about a glass for your beer sir? Sure! Saison French, season, French pronunciation: sz is a pale ale that is highly carbonated, fruity, spicy, and often bottle conditioned. So there ya go, something interesting and new to go along with an equally interesting and new evening post lockdown where everything seems interesting and new. We were back and forth to Mikey's a few times that evening, also enjoying another items I haven't seen before, single serve bottles of saki. Yes, it's true... Saki to go! Thanks Mikey!
