Sleeping was absolutely impossible as it felt like we were on the motorway. The noise was right by our heads! We complained to the General Manager, Gian Pietro who i must say is the best thing to have happened to that place; charming, classy and elegant. Unlike the Hemingway. He immediately moved us the next day to Estrella which is right above the kitchen. They also charged us extra for the pleasure of sleeping in this room. The minute the cook starts cooking in the kitchen its as though YOU are in the kitchen. The smell of the horrible oil they use as well as the lobster and fish smell takes over the room and its impossible to sleep or stay there as it really is disgusting. We also saw several cockroaches just outside our bedroom door running into the kitchen below which was revolting. When we complained on our last day and asked for them to at least compensate us by not charging us for the extras we were told to speak to Paola the owner who conveniently was unavailable. If the prices reflected the quality of the establishment i would understand but at over $350 a night this place is taking everyone for a ride. No investment has been made to lift this place out of the crumbling state it is in since we were last there. The food is inedible. We tried a bowl of pasta on the first day before seeing the cockroaches and it was truly disgusting. Even the staff admit they know its not clean but are left helpless. We were told the place was fumigated a week ago and that it should be fine but they clearly dont clean the kitchens well enough. Also the smell of the sewage in the morning at breakfast is horrendous. It is definitely on the lowest end of the spectrum as far as hotels go in Tulum and is more of a backpackers location and the prices should reflect that. We stayed at The Beach and Cabanas before the Hemingway (they were full from 26th onwards hence why we moved) which is charming, clean and delicious!! Sad to see the Hemingway has lost its charm! The beachfront rooms seem ok but the rooms we were in are a no/no if you want a relaxing holiday.
My boyfriend and I are staying at a nearby resort and can 't stop the cravings for Hemingways! We 're in Tulum for 10 days and by the end of this trip at least 3 nights will have been spent at this Restaurant for dinner. It 's crazy because you want to experience as much as you can, but Hemingways is solid and consistently producing great food! Location: Can 't be beat! The restaurant is located just a few tiny steps down to the beach. You have a great view of the gulf and the beautiful water while you dine. The inside of the restaurant is very cozy as well. Just a very intimate setting in a beautiful place. Food: Honestly this place could have absolutely no atmosphere and I would still rate it 5 stars because of the food. Our first visit, we had to get in a really quick bite to eat and ran into Hemingways. We checked out the menu (which is drawn on a chalkboard) and ordered the Tuna Tartar and Grilled Octopus. It took about 12-15 minutes which is perfect timing. When we saw the food we were immediately impressed. The presentation was beautiful and made us want to dive in. The food was so fresh and the flavors were so refined. On our second visit we started with the cheese plate and had the seafood pasta for dinner... what a treat! The cheese selection was a great variety and a sizeable amount of food. The seafood pasta... was so flavorful and filling! It was filled with calamari giant prawns. The sauce made the entire dish! And lets not forget about the delicious homemade bread. We were offered complementary house bread and it was phenomenal! There was one type in particular that was a focaccia with onions which was our favorite. I could eat just a whole plate of their bread. So great! Service: We were fortunate to be greeted by the owner on our first visit. He was originally from Italy and had a great story to tell. He took care of us for the majority of our meal with the help of a few other gentlemen. It was a very welcoming and inviting first visit that prompted our return the next day. On our second visit, the servers were quick, knowledgable, and friendly. We were having more of an intimate evening that night and it was made perfect by having such a polite staff. Price: We were shocked at how reasonably priced the food was for the size and deliciousness! As mentioned before, we had to eat in a hurry our first visit and we were laughing at ourselves saying this is going to be the most expensive dinner on our trip and we don 't even have time to eat it. We were so wrong! The bill was $37USD for the 2 entrees and 2 beers. For TULUM this is a steal. We were so full and satisfied in the end, we literally thought they comped something and had to look over the itemized receipt to see if we were charged for everything. Hemingways is simply the best value on the beach. We can 't even get these prices back at home in Florida for what we got. Overall: We can 't wait to go back. It 's true... when on vacation you need to try all the options around, but Hemingways will make you think twice. Keep up the delicious food and hospitality!
The chef is a true lover of what she does and she does it just like she would at home in Bologna! We had the Seafood Risotto and it was heavenly! Also the tagliatellie pomodore was delicious! Foodies should not miss this place! We just wished we could have had more room for more of her food!
