The only drawback for locals is that they do NOT validate parking for breakfast (only afternoon tea and dinner - seems odd). The made-to-order omelettes and waffles were awesome! Chef was backed up on the waffle station so I returned my seat with no expectation of anything. 10min later once the line cleared, chef brought waffles to my table without me asking - amazing!Great views of the tarmac and runway. Fun to watch the planes arrive and leave.
Globe is the restaurant of the airport Fairmont hotel; it's right next to the bar, which is a more relaxing spot to wait for your flight, with deep armchairs and floor to ceiling windows. Globe also has nice views of the mountains and part of the runway, but it has an unimaginative menu. Although the food was fine, we were bemused by how much the restaurant charged for cappuccino ($8.00) and plain (not so good) coffee ($7.00). It seems almost mean to charge a lunch bill of $75.00 an additional $7.00 because I asked for half a cup of coffee after I finished the cappuccino (and didn't even get a fresh cup). I would happily have added more tip for the server instead. So beware! (Globe is okay if you don't mind over-priced airport eateries - such as Gordon Ramsay at Heathrow.)
My wife and I dine here EVERY time we have a few hour layover at YVR. Yes….its at the end of the terminal and yes, its a little pricey BUT………The ambience, service and cuisine are well worth a visit. Solid wine list and friendly, helpful staff make the break between flights highly enjoyable. Even though we were not checked into the hotel itself, the staff at the front desk graciously store our carry-on luggage, with a smile.First rate in every respect.
The GOOD: The restaurant setting is lovely and the hostess/reception was very friendly and accommodating the NOT-SO-GOOD: GROSSLY overpriced for the decent, (but not outstanding) food. Our server was, at best, mediocre. Our bill was $167 and there was no alcohol (2 apps, 2 entrees, 1 shared dessert and 1 coffee) . Cedar-wrapped salmon was overdone and , frankly, a tiny portion. Yes, I know it is located in an airport, but I expect much more from Fairmont restaurant, esp for those prices. The cost of our meal (again, no alcohol) was actually more than my hotel stay!!!! If I could go back in time, I would have walked back through the airport and eaten a basic dinner at White Spot and saved myself about $130.
My wife and I stopped in here during a long layover, figuring it was probably better than the airplane food that we would eat otherwise. We got there for an early seating, so it wasn't crowded and the service was outstanding (well done Josephine!). The food was creative and tasty (great crab cakes and a mac'n cheese with lobster that I truly enjoyed). The only down side is Globe@YVR is expensive, even by Canadian standards.
