We came across some photos of it on Instagram, and the photos shows really well presented bingsoo. It is located in a convenient location on Cambie near 14th. Passion8 Dessert Cafe Bingsoo Outside. Passion8 Dessert Cafe is located right on Cambie, but it has a small 3-car parking lot right in front. The majority of time it’s full, but it’s nice to have the option to park really close. It is worth mentioning that the store is facing West. This is unfortunate they had to put blinds in front of their store, unable to showcase their interior space to attract more customers. Also, the West sun makes the store’s quite warm in the afternoon.
Passion8 is our favourite spot for Korean shaved ice. The portions aren’t as big as other spots like Snowy Village but the taste and quality are much better. Because of this you will be paying a bit more as well. We have returned and would definitely recommend.
Passion8 is most popular for their Korean milk shaved ice, aka bingsoo. It is essentially a mixture of ice and milk shaved in paper thin sheets.
I haven't tried any of their frozen desserts for which they are most popular for, have tried some of their cakes, including the Matcha and Valrhona cheesecakes, as well as their Red Velvet and Chocolate layered cakes. I quite enjoyed all the cakes, with the exception of the chocolate which I found to be a bit bland and stale). Being an Asian-style place, the cakes were all lighter and milder in flavour compared to traditonal Western-style ones. I do find their prices to be a bit on the higher side, especially for the layered cakes. Although this isn't really my cup of tea, it is a good option for anyone seeking something a little bit lighter.<br/ <br/ Matcha Cheesecake $4.95):<br/ 3.5/5<br/ This is more of an Asian-style cheesecake, and is more lighter and fluffier than the New York types of cheesecakes. Although I do personally prefer the latter over the former, I did quite enjoy this cake for what it is. It was quite fluffly, albeit a tad bit dry, and mildly sweet with a subtle hint of green tea flavour. A good option for those who don't like overly sweet desserts.<br/ <br/ Gateau Choco $6.75):<br/ 2.5/5<br/ The cake itself was quite moist and mildly sweet. I didn't really care too much for the frosting however; I found it to be kind of stiff and a little gummy. Oddly, although it certainly looks very chocolatey, I seriously couldn't detect too much cocoa flavour at all; in fact, if I was blind-folded, I probably wouldn't have been able to tell that it was a chocolate cake. It also had a slightly stale flavour. Overall, I did find this to be kind of a disappointment.<br/ <br/ Valrhona Cheese Cake $4.95):<br/ 4/5<br/ Like the matcha version, the cake here was soft, fluffy and light. It was mildly sweet, slightly tangy and had a good, distinct chocolate flavour that was missing in the Gateau Choco. Even though I wasn't the biggest fan of Asian-style cheesecakes, I actually really liked this one.<br/ <br/ Red Velvet Cake $6.75):<br/ 4/5<br/ The cake was soft and moist, and had a really nice tang. They were relatively conservative with the cream cheese frosting; as such the cake was not as rich as the versions that I've had in the past. Nevertheless, it was still quite tasty, and a good option for those looking for something a bit lighter.
The best bingsu I’ve ever had. My first time was in August 2017 and yesterday was my 2nd time. My dessert lover momma, approved! <br/ <br/ The bingsu is shaved ice, so thin that when you scoop it, it’s like ice cream and melts right into your mouth. It’s super refreshing and the toppings are generous. <br/ <br/ I’m not huge on dessert but I gotta say, this continuously catches my taste buds!
