Surprised to find a cafe of this sort in Mortimer. Has the feel of a classic transport cafe or an urban, people’s cafe. But it looked my kind of place, so I made a point of trying breakfast there before a walk. A biggish cafe inside, but I sat outside at a table. Numerous different combinations of a fried breakfast on offer. I chose one with scrambled eggs and--a rare delight these days--fried bread. Also a big tomato nicely charred from the grill, good bacon, a large portion of mushrooms, baked beans, etc. Just what I needed to fuel my hike over to Silchester and beyond. Came up quickly, served hot. They had at least 6 staff on, so this is a serious cafe. The staff were outstanding. One lady chatted to me in a friendly manner, and it seemed natural, not going through the motions. Made my day. One lad came out to see if I was being served. I was; but that he had the awareness to notice me out front and check was impressive. Like everything about Mortimer Cafe, he was on the ball. For a weekday, this cafe was pretty busy. To me that shows it must’ve earned a good reputation.
We went today for a late breakfast, we have been here quite a few time in the past. The food was good but not as good as usual there was a younger lad cooking maybe that's why, my sausage was slightly under and the eggs on the hard side. An off day as we have never had this happen before. we will return again and hope it's back to normal next time.
Although the food and service was very good,i cannot get over the fact that egg and beans on toast with a coffee cost £8.40. If you plan to come here, you may want to speak to a mortgage advisor.
1 step small up into this larger than expected café. simple menu , easy to read. open kitchen for all to see. outside seating .
