Disappointed in the accommodation. Our room was dated and tatty and carpets and bedding old and worn. The bathroom skirting boards held together with duck tape and I was a little freaked out when I saw the mouse trap under the dressing table. We couldn't open any windows, our room was hot and stuffy. Very poor lighting on stairs when going to our room and the bottom of the stairs was full of clutter. The location was good right next to the station to be able to get out and about and all the staff seemed friendly however unfortunately the rooms need a lot of money spending on them.
This pub is a fantastic asset to the local community. Run by the most welcoming hospitable couple Mick Claire. Nothing was too much trouble. Excellent home cooked food. An outstanding local burger and a home made steak and Stilton pie. Already booked to return.
Paid 110 pounds for Bed Breakfast, only there was no breakfast. There was no heating in the room but we managed to steal a fan heater from another room. The shower glass collapsed while I was in the shower. If this had happened whilst someone was on the loo it could have been nasty. The only reason I'm giving the two stars is i had a comfortable night's sleep. We've stayed here before and were pleased with it. What on earth has happened?
This is, without doubt, one of the worst eating experiences I have had. The bar was cold, uninviting and lacks any atmosphere. The four of us were the only people having a lunchtime meal yet we waited over 45 minutes for the dishes to be brought from the kitchen. The first thing that struck us was hot meals served on cold plates, an elementary mistake in the most basic of kitchen. The next problem was the rice that came with the chilli con carne, it was either microwaved or the chef doesn 't understand what rice should look like when it is cooked. The Lasagne seemed to suffer from the same problem. The only thing that was truly eatable was the ploughman 's but by the time it came to the table my wife had eaten all she could of her Chilli. I couldn 't understand why my ploughman 's, surely a dish that doesn 't exactly challenge any chef, was the last dished to be served, 50 minutes after it was ordered. When questioned I was told the a ploughman 's was 'quite a complex dish '. In the end at least half the meals were left on three out of the four plates. When it came to the bill we expected some small recompense but none was forthcoming, when we asked for a discount we were told in no uncertain terms that 50 minute wait was perfectly acceptable and no discount would be given. In all the staff in general could do with lessons in customer service.
