The Writer's Block Bookstore

Everything you could hope for in an independent bookstore! During my first visit to Alaska, I was looking for something to read that would capture the local culture. The Writer's Block exceeded my expectations, featuring a whole section dedicated to Alaska's writers and contributors. The atmosphere was charming, and my only regret is that I couldn't spend more time there. Service: 5/5.

Despite being situated in the rugged beauty of Alaska, it seems that the political ideologies of Portland and Seattle have unfortunately infiltrated this lovely space, seemingly intent on causing disruption. Everywhere I looked, there was an abundance of modern, often unappealing art—much of it feminist-influenced—carrying political messages. The literature on display predominantly featured authors from a singular ideological viewpoint, which felt overwhelmingly one-sided. Instead of a diverse representation of perspectives, the space seemed to promote a unified narrative that celebrated various self-identified, marginalized, and intersecting groups. It truly saddens me to share this perspective. I wish I could wholeheartedly recommend this establishment to those who have clearly worked hard to create a haven for book lovers like myself. However, the pervasive narrow-mindedness against ideals such as the nuclear family, patriotism, the rights of the unborn, and my personal beliefs makes it impossible for me to advocate for this place. For those with similar values to mine, it might as well have a sign saying, "We don’t serve your kind here."

The atmosphere here is fantastic, and I can't wait to share this spot with my friends! Everything from the inviting ambiance and the book selection to the delicious food makes this the perfect place to visit. A special shout-out to Madison—she was polite and articulate with both me and my friends. Thank you so much!

Great vibe, very cozy and relaxing. Staff was friendly and helpful. It was a nice place for a road weary traveler to spend a the afternoon. Highly recommend if you're in the area and want a quick bite to eat or a refreshing drink!Food: 5/5
