Unfortunately you hear quite a bit of you neighbours. The restaurant is very good. The prices are a bit to high. Again staff is very helpful and friendly. The breakfast is, as usually in southern countries, a complete disappointment. The hotel could make it easily to a 4 rating if it works on those small neglectfulnesses.
The Hotel Lido perches on a promontory overlooking the southern end of lake Maggiore just north of the town of Angera. I stayed there in January a time of year that I suspect did not show off the hotel to its best advantage. The first thing that struck me was the homely atmosphere. This was probably helped by the fact that the hotel was far from full, in fact on my last day there I came down to find one place set for breakfast so I assume that I was the only guest the preceding night. There is a brightness and cheerfulness about the place. The staff are friendly, though several of them had limited English. The hotel gets most of the basics right. The rooms are clean, the bed was comfortable and the bathroom is well designed and equipped although the shower was the “rainfall” type which means either wearing a shower cap or standing in the corners of the shower stall if you don’t want to get your hair wet. There are no facecloths supplied, but as I was on my own I was able to press one of the shower mats into service. The main problem I had was the temperature of the hot water which barely got north of lukewarm. In the current energy crunch the hotel may be economising on energy use. The radiators were certainly hot enough. There is not much choice at breakfast, but this has generally been my experience of smaller Italian hotels. On the other hand they do a mean cioccolata calda. A couple of things that you do need to be aware of. It is a 15 minute walk to the centre of Angera, but the first part of walk is along a narrow twisting road with no separate space for pedestrians so for some of it you have to walk on the road itself. This makes it is necessary to keep you wits about you. The second (one of my regular gripes) the is that bedside reading lights which are almost useless if you want to read in bed. Bring a reading light or a book with large print. There is a TV with two/tree remotes. I never succeeded in getting beyond the menu, but then I am not a TV watcher. There is better watching on the Internet. The hotel restaurant is reputedly good, but it was only open on one of the nights I was there and I had a luncheon arrangement for that day, so I never got to try it. The food rating is for the breakfast
The position is fantastic, with nice lake view. Service perfect, sea food in the sufficient limit, nothing special. Price a little hight compared with food quality. External Terrace with fantastic panorama in front of Big Carlone Borromeo statue, opposite the front lake.
