Smoke 'N Ash left me speechless and wanting more. Hardwood smoked meats in a direct collision course with the exotic spices used in berbere, awaze, and mitmita make for some new flavors that are not yet defined in the culinary dictionary. Holy smokes is the best way to sum it all up!I tried the Tex/Ethiopian platter which features brisket, baby back ribs (yes, pork at an Ethiopian establishment), pork rib tibs, and doro wot tibs, alongside miser wot and gomen, all served with injera bread. While every main course/meat was otherworldly delicious, the smoked chicken (doro wot tibs) was the unexpected crowning champ of the platter. Needless to say, it was one of the best and most memorable meals I 've ever had. I can 't wait to return.
We went to Smoke'N Ash last night for the first time. Fortunately, we ordered our food by 6:30p.m. The reason I said fortunately is because by 6:50p.m., they were out of chicken, ribs, and brisket. We ordered brisket tips with potato salad and rib tips with fries. The portions were so small we were still hungry after eating. My husband was not pleased with the barbeque rib tips being placed on the fries. The barbeque sauce was all over the fries and it was a soggy disgusting mess. On a positive note, the customer service was good. Overall, the food was okay, but not for a super small portion for $30+. We will not be returning.
When you walk in they make you feel welcome so already off to a good start. The BBQ spot on and fantastic and the Ethiopian cuisine was just amazing. I love this place and wish it was closer to me.
A must visit place if you are fanatical about good food. Also, if you love experimenting with different cuisine, flavors and pairings. We ordered the platter and was pleasantly surprised how well Texas barbecue blended with Ethiopian cuisine. The pork, beef, chicken, even the teff pancakes, were out of this world. Wash it all down with the ginger and honey tea, and you will already be planning the next visit. And why not, the place is truly value for money to boot.A couple of things to keep in mind though. The place is almost a hole in the wall, and don't expect much in terms of ambience, though I guess you can call it rustic/quaint. The location is a rundown strip mall almost in Mansfield, a good 30-40 mins drive from both Dallas and Forth Worth. The place is family run with the husband and wife team doing almost everything from cooking to managing the cash register. Their two daughters were helping when we were there, but be prepared to wait and even help yourselves with water/soda etc. They are a lovely family, and by the end of the meal you get the feeling you have known them for a very long time. Because of staff shortages timing can be a bit unpredictable and truncated. Check before you leave since you will be driving a while.A couple of months back The New York Times had selected this place as one of the top 50 restaurants in the US. It is an honor they truly deserve.
The food was good but come knowing what you want.... No recommendations or explanations just read or look at pictures (which I got off Yelp . Even after I said it was my first time and that I wanted this one picture she was like well that's a lot of different things (still no help or no name of the foods seemed irritated... which I ended up just ordering a bunch of different things anyways.... Just no help or customer service.
