Cubacan - Asbury Park

I had high hopes for this dinner. I’m latina and was craving a good ropa vieja. I made a reservation for an inside table but had to ask for an outside one because it was freezing in the restaurant. It was a gorgeous evening at the shore, so that was a great switch anyway. The service was very, very slow: servers coming to greet or acknowledge me/us, waiting for drinks also felt like a long time. The food does not taste typical. Not sure if it’s by design, to accommodate to the American palate or just inexperience with the cuisine. The chicken in the chicken empanadas was hard, so weird. The dough was delicious, the filling wasn’t. Not horrible but overall fell short. The ropa vieja was very bland, even after I added salt and pepper.

Food was good and our server was very nice. Tables very close to each other. Sitting in the next table lap. Not enjoyable. Bathrooms definitely need a update.
