We took our young miniature dachshund puppy with us for a Cream Tea on a sunny Sunday morning and sat in the pleasant outdoor seating area. There was a gorgeous fluffy black cat walking round, and occasionally the odd hen would pop by to see what we might have dropped for them. Though it was busy, the outside tables and chairs are spaced well, and divided into two areas by plants, so doesn't feel crowded. There was no menu on the table, and no instructions regarding ordering or payment, so after waiting for a couple of minutes I went inside to the little bar. The waitress was lovely and when I asked for a menu, she apologied that there may be rather a wait. No one came to take our order, so I went back inside, ordered and paid. The food part of the Cream Tea arrived fairly quickly, 2 large scones each, jam, clotted cream and butter curls. Half way through our food I decided to go and see where our drinks were (a pot of tea and a filter coffee). There was no one inside, and though I rang the bell no one appeared. I returned to our table and continued eating. Now desperately in need of my tea I went back inside. The waitress was just loading a tray with our drinks, cups, saucers, milk and sugar and I carried it out for her. The drinks were fine, and the crockery looked clean and undamaged. The food was a little disappointing sadly. As others have mentioned the scones had obviously been microwaved to heat them up, which definitely affected the texture and flavour. The jam was okay, not the best quality but passable. It was a luxury to have real clotted cream, but personally I don't like receiving it in a branded plastic pot (Rodda's Cornish Clotted Cream)...it cheapened the effect a bit, plus I like lashings of cream on my cream tea, and there wasn't nearly enough for that. The owners were really friendly, and made a big fuss of our puppy, I think I'd like to give More Tea Vicar another try and go back for a meal soon, their Sunday Roast certainly sounds lovely.
Even though we live in the neighboring village, this was our first time visiting this restaurant, only to realize it had been open for 3 years without our knowledge! Perhaps a small investment in advertising in local parish magazines could help bring more awareness. What a delightful discovery it turned out to be! Tucked away among trees and shrubbery near the Charing Challock road, this restaurant offers a variety of light meals and more filling options. We ordered the triple stacked prawn mayo with salad and crisp garnish, as well as the toasted ham and cheese panini, both of which were the most delicious dishes we've ever tasted...and we've tried a lot over the years! The service was efficient, relaxed, and pleasant. We dined outdoors and were accompanied by a group of cyclists in Lycra and two charming hens that sat near our feet...although they didn't beg for food, which was fortunate as we weren't keen on sharing. We will definitely be returning very soon.
As we're fairly local, we thought we'd give it a try. We, apart from one other couple, were the only customers at the time.My partner ordered a currant scone and I ordered a cheese scone (they had no more plain scones unfortunately). Most reviews seem positive but regrettably ours is not. The tea pot with 1 bag was pretty weak and the scones had been over heated; I'd guess they were microwaved. Both, but particularly mine , were so hot they were difficult to hold and cut and once cut, mine in particular broke into several pieces. Both were difficult to spread butter onto even though the butter was quite soft, and I was surprised that for a cheese scone it tasted remarkably like a plain one. Both scones were a little on the hard side around the edges and very crumbly, due to the over heating. We were unsure what to make of this tea room and maybe the food and drink issues were a one off, as the actual flavour of both scones was not at all bad. We'll leave it a while and maybe return later in the year.
I attempted to go to this restaurant for lunch a few days ago, but discovered that it was closed. The signboard outside has been removed. A local informed me that the owner's wife has left town once more. It seems likely that the restaurant is now permanently closed.
MTV was absolutely fantastic. There were 13 of us, so we pre-booked the Christmas menu. We had a brilliant evening - the food was delicious and there was plenty of it. We all felt very welcome. Everyone in the party loved the food and the atmosphere, and we will definitely be coming back soon. Thank you so much for such a fabulous evening.
