It 's a traditional Portuguese restaurant but is musty in decoration and in service. It 's very old school, bordering on the seedy. The meal starts with the typical Portuguese practice of slapping down bread, cheese, olives and butter on your table with no mention of the cost of each item (yes, you pay if you eat, and the total cost would be around 7 8 euros! To be fair to the restaurant, this is quite normal in Portugal, but has always felt dishonest to me. Why put anything on the table I have not ordered? Reminds me of gypsies in busy tourist squares offering lavendar. This time I ordered the picanha, which came hard as a patent leather shoe. When I asked the waitress if it wasn 't normal to ask the customer how they wanted the meat, she said yes! So why didn 't she ask me? No idea. Actually I do have an idea: on the two occasions I 've eaten there alone, I 've felt that a solo diner is a second class diner. You 're given a table in some kind of dark corner or next to a busy waiter service area, as though you didn 't really exist. I didn 't have desert as I wasn 't comfortable and just wanted to finish my meal and pay. I won 't be writing any more reviews on this restaurant as I will most certainly not return. The previous evening I went to a different restaurant in Aveiro where I was received with a smile, offered any table I wanted and enjoyed the food and wine.
We had a very traditional Portuguese meal here, sitting at the bar. Just grilled meat with rice and salad for two. It was plain but very tasty, cooked over a charcoal fire. All very fresh and on show. Half carafe of house wine and a bottle of sparkling water came to €30 with tip. They only had space at the bar but it was comfortable and great fun talking to the Portuguese diners on either side! Very friendly. Needed to use google translate with the nice waiter who was 78! Good fun and good meal.
Excellent traditional restaurant in the centre of Aveiro. Much larger than it seems from outside but on the evening of our visit full of satisfied diners. Good standard of Portuguese cuisine (we had a very good and large octopus dish) and very moderate prices. House wine one of the best we experienced in Portugal. Recommended.
Eu recomendo.
