When visiting Stanthorpe, I highly recommend this restaurant. The young chefs here really know how to create delicious dishes. I appreciate that they use locally sourced ingredients from within a 3-hour radius. We enjoyed a picnic here and one of my favorite dishes was the Venison terrarium with strawberry and peppercorn sauce. Honestly, every dish we tried was fantastic. They also offer a tasting menu which I can't wait to try next time. The restaurant's decor is definitely eye-catching and impressive.
Unfortunately, there is nothing special about this venue. The food is hit and miss, with the antipasti platter mediocre at best, while the mains were nice. There is not much ambience and the experience had somewhat of a tuckshop feel, considering the location. I wouldn't recommend it.
Wonderful. We were visiting Stanthorpe and were looking around for somewhere to eat and they found us on twitter; nothing on the menu was vegan, but they said they could put something together for us. We were a little incredulous, and expected to get there and we served a salad. Gosh were we wrong! They created a delicious antipasto platter and a puttanesca. And, despite what we had been told, only two of the wines weren't vegan, so we shared a gorgeous bottle of Viognier with the meal. The owners are absolutely wonderful and were so helpful to us. They also make their own pasta, biscotti and bread (though unfortunately, none of these are vegan). If you're vegan, give them a bit...read more
I had a wonderful dining experience at Ballandean. While visiting the Stanthorpe region, I stumbled upon the Barrel Room Cafe at Ballandean Estate Winery and it was a fantastic find. The lunch I had was excellent. I started with risotto balls that were filled with pumpkin, mozzarella, and pancetta, served in a delicious napolitano sauce and topped with grated Parmegiano. The flavors were delightful. I then enjoyed the freshly made fettucini with prawn, scallop, chili, garlic, rocket, and tomato. The pasta was incredibly fresh, cooked perfectly, and the prawns and scallop were outstanding. This was one of the best pasta dishes I have ever had. I highly recommend a visit to this restaurant.
