Should I let the secret out? This place is cheap, good and friendlyThere nowWill I ever get a seat again? YesThe atmosphere is homely.
An absolute suburban gem of a restaurantThe staff are so friendly and passionate, and that passion really shows in the food.
After a long journey by car, we had the chance to stop at this restaurant in the evening. Very good food completed by an attentive service. The waitress advised us to taste the "fleur de bourrache" served with our starter to discover its "oystery taste", which worked so well with the sea food starter. The main composed of veal and pommes boulangere was well accompanied by a Chilean red wine, again recommanded by our waitress. I didn't take a dessert (I'm not a sweet tooth person) but the coffee was served with some chocolate which made a fantastic conclusion to the whole meal. If you are in Bar-Le-Duc, you need to try this address.
We wanted to go walking along Lac du Der, which is a giant reservoir and the largest artificial lake in Europe, so looked for a decent restaurant for lunch nearby and found this Bistro in the Michelin Red Guide. It was a 90 minute drive from where we are staying near Epernay, but it was worth the effort as the restaurant was absolutely perfect. It is tiny, in an old renovated epicerie, and everything is cooked in-house, something that has been getting rarer in France, to the point where the government is trying to force restaurants to show what is inhouse and what is brought in and reheated ... not a bad idea in itself, but sadly they have allowed too many loopholes. It is irrelevant here as the Chef's commitment to his craft is obvious. We took their daily lunch menu for €34, not inexpensive, but worth every euro.A cold soup of chicken, crab and pea to start which, while sounding slightly bizarre, was mouth-watering delicious and a main of slow-cooked oven roasted pork served with puree and green beans was excellent, as was the dessert of diced fresh fruit, custard and brittle. All wonderful fresh ingredients perfectly cooked and presented.A good wine list (including a goodly number of half bottle selections) varied enough for all tastes and budgets. Service was excellent, friendly and efficient and they were very welcoming not only of us but also of our 2 small dogs ... who do have a lot of restaurant experience :-)I cannot believe the review below from the Belgian who went away hungry, as all our courses were more than generous, and we definitely did not leave hungry, and cannot understand how anyone could. However, this place is about how great is the food and I would have still been pleased even with smaller quantities. This bistro is well worth a visit. The food is creative, interesting and a serious cut above nearly every one of the restaurants we have tried in our time in the Marne. I would love to have them move nearer to Bordeaux as we would become serious regulars.
