I have read now the prior reviews and find some of the negative reviews suggestive that the reviewers lack a perspective on the Basel dining scene in general or what to expect when dining in Switzerland (or even in Europe versus the US, for example.) In short, 800 degrees offered me each time I went there excellent, attentive service -- a staff that knew in detail the food and drink menu and could advise well on it -- a clean and comfortable dining space (though the neighborhood near the Basel Messe is not the most lovely part of Basel Stadt,) and perfectly cooked and fresh steak (and seared tuna!) prepared in the way I wanted and expected it to be prepared. The current wines on offer by the glass are excellent for the food offered, in my view. I'm writing this review in hopes that this restaurant can survive and prosper in the difficult Basel restaurant business (challenging marketplace to competition from neighboring French and German-located restaurants across the border.) In short, I want to have this place continue to be a great option for me when I want excellent steak, sides, and good wine, with friendly and knowledgable service.
It is way too expensive for what it offers. Dishes are expensove plus siders are extra! There are way better options in town like Che que lomo or Blockhouse
I came here with my wife and had high expectation based on reviews. We had a nice bottle of Italian Valpolicella Red wine which was very good. We had a tuna starter which was well presented and came with small hot red peppers, wasabi, and even wasabi ice cream. I would recommended this and the portion is big enough to split. For the main we had the chateaubriand and ordered it rare. The meal came and we each had three nice slices of tenderloin with a massive portion of tiny fries and hollandaise. The meat was not seasoned as much as I like and portions of the meat was dry. I would recommend trying another cut. Also, I prefer for the roast to be cut table side. The service was very good.
A bit hidden away from the center of Basel, delivering excellent food, with excellent service. Thank you!
We went for a farewell lunch to one of our team mates who is a total meat lover. I was tasked with finding a suitable restaurant and what I saw on their menu sounded fabulous. And in general it totally delivered to the great satisfaction of all. The tartar was exceptional - really delicious. I had the grilled foie gras (duck) - the slightly thicker piece was perfectly done, the smaller piece was sadly overcooked. We then proceeded to order a wide selection of nearly everything on the menu - from Wagyu, over the Wolowina rib cut, the luma secret cut - one of us also had the Irish filet. The meat was perfectly prepared and simply out of this world. Seriously scrumptious. well enough seasoned that no sauce was required. Pommes allumettes yummy, spinach and broccoli sides rounded it at all off. Fortunately it was all on expense account otherwise it would have put a serious hole in my pocket. Service was friendly and very good and competent - lots of good advice and recommendations. German head waiter? If I have a small complaint it's only that almost all Wagyu I've ever eaten has been much more melt in the the mouth than this one was - I wish had seen the pre-cooked marbling. But on the taste front, I was totally convinced.
