Our main person took our orders, came back and refilled our drinks.... Then boom quite quickly our food arrived. Wife ordered Willies Hearty Platter and I had a simple Grilled Patty Melt with Onion Rings. The griddle cake that came with wifes meal was as big or bigger than a dinner plate. The rest of her meal was done right. My Patty Melt was fine, other than a little greasy...could have been the onions or mushrooms or more likely grilled in butter on a griddle after it was assembled. Still good, just a little greasier than I like. Onion Rings were fine, not hand or home made, but still fine. Service was excellent 5??s Food OK 3??s...who can eat a dinner plate sized griddle cake. Atmosphere 3??s....small quaint diner. Bastrop is a tourist town, so expect to pay UP for the Maxine's experience. Service was great, food was OK, but on the high side of the price scale.
Bastrop?s best. Surprise opened with half and half iced tea. Wow ! Im not sure what brand the tea is but it was exceptional. Plenty of ice makes me very happy. Its sunday and they have live music on the patio. What a treat! Then the food came? the burger was good, fries crispy but unfortunately i ordered the peach rosemary chicken?. I will never do that again. The chicken was overcooked tough. The corn had no flavor, salt pepper or butter. Like dumped strain out of dollar general can of corn.
This place was very solid. We stopped here for lunch on the way to Houston. The iced tea was delicious and so were the sandwiches.
It was so homey and welcoming. Looks like your mama or grandma 's kitchen when you were little! Such a great feel. Food was REALLY good. Want to take our kids next time. Sooo much better than a franchise breakfast place. Food made with real love. Nice people. Then we gotta go again, to try lunch!
Excellent breakfast. I had the chicken waffles. Perfect. The chicken is pounded and perfectly breaded and fried. Syrup and/or white gravy is offered on the side. Egg dishes are large and also very good. It can get busy with a line. Choose eating at the bar. Service is excellent. Rated highly by Texas Monthly. Iced tea is excellent, served in a large Mason jar. Ask for lemon.
