This bar no longer does food and currently is run by Boundary Brewery so really needs to delete this page and start again. It is now a craft beer establishment. They still serve Guinness but no other regular draught larger or beer.
Stopped for a drink as it was near to our restaurant reservation. A very traditional Belfast pub which serves a fantastic pint probably nicest I drank in Belfast. If you are looking for a no fuss traditional pub this certainly should be on your list when visiting the Cathedral Quarter.
The John Hewitt recently changed hands, and is now being run by the Boundary craft brewery. That means the beer which was already decent has gone up a further notch. I 'd like them to have some cask, but the keg they have is excellent (prices are fairly standard for the style of ale). Just as importantly, and despite a lick of paint, its retained its charm and clientele so far: there are some very busy bars in this so called 'cathedral quarter ', but the John Hewitt seems to always have a just a bustling and welcoming rather than manic atmosphere. Often has decent (free) music in the evenings and though I 've never tried it there has been food in the past. Do yourself a favour and get a second hand book from Keats Chapman on nearby North Street, and pop in for a couple of pints and a read early in the afternoon.
When we visited, the restaurant was fairly quiet with only around 10 customers. However, the atmosphere was pleasant and the bartenders were very friendly. The beer selection was excellent.
