You can relax in the rustic tropical yard, help yourself to a cold beer from the cooler, and simply tell Maurice, also known as Wish Willy, what you'd like to eat. The experience alone is worth a visit, even if the food wasn't as delicious. However, Maurice serves up incredibly tasty local dishes, making it the best of both worlds.
Awesome experience. Do not be in a hurry because nothing is fast here. The ambience is as good as the food. Walk in the gate, get your beer out of the blue cooler. Wave to Maurice when you're ready to order. He tells you what he has fresh that day. I got there right at 5 when it opens and got my food at 6:30. About 10 other people came in and he gradually got the orders and being receptive to the clientele, he got the grouchy old ladies food prepared and sent them on their way. Mine came out shortly after. This is a backyard of this dudes house. Chill raegea (sp) music playing, tiki torches lit, a 50 gallon drum grill cooking all of the food and smelling amazing, and a dog running around. It's an experience for sure. And he is a character. Totally worth the wait. Also, there are no menu prices posted. He literally tells you a price when you're all finished. I had 4 beers, grilled.lobster tails, rice, and beans and it came to $40 BZ, or $20 USD. No complaints whatsoever. I didn't get a pic of the food because I slammed it as soon as it hit the table.
It was pouring when we arrived and Willy made sure we had a dry place to sit! We loved our meals. This was our second visit to Caye Caulker and we knew where to go for our first meal!
What a great place to get an amazing meal. Maurice was warm and welcoming and provides a great dining experience. A must stop. Walk slowly
If you visit Caye Caulker and skip this restaurant, you're definitely missing out. If Anthony Bourdain ever visited Belize, I think an entire episode would focus on Wish Willy's. We dined here twice and tried the grouper, snapper, lobster, and shrimp. The dishes were simple but incredibly tasty. The atmosphere, music, and personality of the restaurant are all excellent.
