Great restaurant run by a monastery to raise money, but the main reason to go is the Tibetan food. It doesn’t get more authentic than this, as others have said the monos where slightly bland but that is why they are served with salt, soy sauce and chilli paste so you make them to your taste. The restaurant had many Tibetan families so it must be authentic.
It was difficult for one to find a restaurant serving vegetarian food in Macleodganj. But to my surprise i was glad to find Shangrila Restaurant, right in busy street of the town and manged by Gyudmed Monastrry. As a rule authentic Chinese and Tibetan foods are bland for Indian taste buds and if you are looking for typical spicy food this is not a place for you. But the food whether it is Indian and/or Tibetan is tasty to say the least. Price wise the cheapest restaurant in Macleodganj as as it run by monks of the attached monastery. Please bear in mind they do have egg preparations on their menu.
We were keen to go here as it's a pure vegetarian tibetan eateries restaurant. But it was the worst decision of the trip. The momos were bland, the noodle soup thukpa was also not authentic, and the spring rolls were so mainly stuffed with white flour, and not crunchy or tasty at all. It's inexpensive, compared to the rest of the other eateries, but not worth it.
I'm not sure why this restaurant is considered a budget option at $2 - it's actually one of the most affordable choices in town. The food is good and reasonably priced, especially the momos which we really enjoyed. The portion sizes are generous and the service is excellent. We ended up eating here almost every day.
