If you aren 't looking for it or know about it, you;ll never just happen across it. But locals and folks in the area are aware of it and it 's a favorite. The gravel parking lot has plenty of pickups and usually a police car or two. The inside has quite the decor. Lots of interesting things on the walls and it 's very rustic . The folks are typical West Texas meaning friendly to a fault. We were told to pick whatever table we wanted. We 'd heard the BBQ was good but they have unique burgers so I had to try one of those. Their burgers are fried (kind of like a chicken-fried steak only with hamburger and I had a jalapeño version of one of those on jalapeño break (for an extra $1 with some onion rings. My wife decided to try the sliced brisket sandwich with some macaroni salad. (When was the last time you saw macaroni salad on a menu?! The burger was very tasty even though I could feel my arteries clogging. The bread was very fresh, the meat was really reminiscent of eating a CFS and the fixins ' were all fresh and tasty. I was a bit disappointed that there wasn 't any perceptible flavor or heat from the jalapeños but it was very good. The onion rings were fair. They were real slices of onions and the batter was light as I like but they could have been in the fryer a little longer. My wife thought the brisket was a little dry though it appeared to have a good smoke ring on it. I think maybe she got some that on the lean side and could have used a little from the moister side of the brisket. The macaroni salad was excellent. Reminded me of they way my mother used to make it. After we 'd stuffed ourselves, we found out that we got free dessert. It was a small cup of either banana pudding or chocolate cake. We had to (of course try each and they were both quite tasty. While we were eating a couple of folks next to us struck up a conversation with us. (Remember, this is West Texas. They live in Midland and said that Big John 's is their favorite restaurant in the area because of the food and how nice the folks working there are. And even though it 's a little bit of a hike from Midland, they don 't mind and like to get out of Midland when they can. (And, if you 've been to Midland, you 'll understand that sentiment. Anyway, we had a great time talking them and it made our lunch all the better. Not that we get to West Texas that often but, if and when we make it back through Big Spring, we 'll try and time it so that we can have either lunch or dinner at Big John 's.
Betty Lous she holds the longest beer license in the state of Texas. Good people it's a nice place to unwind relax!! Down to earth friendly people !!
Think they have 4-5 beers to choose from. Nice adult place to go. Don't really see a lot of kids coming to hang out at this place which is perfect. I was only in here 2 times so I might be wrong but I doubt it.
We ate here as we were driving from Santa Fe to Llano. It was worth the stop. The outside of the restaurant looks rundown but do not let that run you off. The food was really good. Good portions and flavorful bbq. Service was outstanding as well. I would highly recommend.
Don’t judge a book by its cover! The outside of this little place is rough, but the portions are plentiful, the food is affordable and delicious, and the service is friendly.
