Also ordered chicken schnitzel, served with broccolini. Chicken was flavorful, schnitzel was bland. Beautiful building which we were allowed to walk around and explore.
On our way back from Canton we developed a sudden urge to want to grab a bite so I whipped out my trusty Yelp app to see what we could find. I try to go to local places owned by Mom and Pop types. Up popped a selection of places and we chose this place. I've never been to Zoar before so I had no idea what to expect. It has quite the history from a group of Germans escaping religious prosecution in the 1820's. The heart of the town still has many of the original buildings. It's a lot like Roscoe Village. The place we ate at used to be the hotel because Zoar was also a heavily traveled canal town. You can see from the inside how the building was built by hand. My husband began with the Erbsensuppe which is the German traditional pea soup with four hour bacon and croutons. He loved it. He ordered Hackbratentorte which is Tavern meatloaf in a Crust. It's composed of beef and pork with vegetables over a potato pancake with gravy and vegetable of the day. It was just okay we were expecting big flavor but it wasn't there. I had the traditional bratwurst and fries. The brat was really good but served with fries out of a bag. I prefer fresh cut fries. Definitely feel you're back in time with the ambiance just wish the food was better.
Walked up to this place with a little hesitation. Thought it was rough bar and all we wanted was dinner. Walking through the door was like entering a new world. The food was awesome. Even for a busy night the wait staff was prompt and kind. The sauerkraut balls and schnitzel were awesome. But please save room for desert the lemon pepper ice cream and beignets. If you see a elderly couple at the bar have a seat next to them. They are regulars and funny as hell. They also have some great suggestions for places to stay and eat.
The best kept secret when traveling to Amish country!! The service was second to none! The food was incredible! I had the lamb and it was outstanding!!! Everyone will tell you to eat at Dur Dutchman which I was far from impressed even though it was the most suggested restaurant when mentioning my weekend travels. It's off the beaten path but the journey is half the fun. You can't go wrong eating at this establishment, I will definitely be a return customer and will make it a point to stop here to eat anytime I'm traveling within 60 miles of this place. Highly recommend!
Nice little place off the beaten path of Canton. 200 year old building with loads of charm. Worth a visit. Ask to see the ratskeller. Brunch is a hit with the whole family. For dinner, you cannot go wrong with the Scallops paired with the tavern potato , truly an undiscovered gem. Free wifi too. Live music. Great patio. Make the drive!
