I lived in Brandon for 22 years. Hands down best Mexican food in Jackson area best chips, best tampals, best rice. Sure, it's a dive, but many dives have the best food.
An increased discard.. DECOR: OK, its landfill and not for the faint in the heart, but for me who goes with food from the Third World. Interesting aspects: When did you last see Sombreros on the wall of a mex joint? And someone bought some cheap leaves of mosaic tile, pulled the tiles out of the net, and made raw Mexican themes mosaics on the tables (with cactuses, somberos, etc..., and sealed them with acrylic or something. This alone is worth the trip. FOOD: Since Katrina brought a critical mass of Mexicans to the Gulf South, we are blessed with a wave of authentic foods, most places that are about six or seven meat choices in a variety of forms (tacos, hurdles, etc... This is NOT such a place where the food reminds me of old school Americanized Mexican food that you could find in a shopping center served Chico thirty years ago (e.g. BUT it is an elevated form of this type of food and quite delicious. The chips were rustic, but illuminated and warm way about average. The red table salsa was really hot (hoter than most salsa verde the green, which is usually the hotter. The yellow rice was well seasoned and I had tasted a hint of cumino in it, and the beans were also tasteful. I had a few things with the shredded beef and they were pretty good. Three or four Mexican beers including Corona. I had XX Amber. Price more than fair. I could go back.
Go to dinner. You definitely don't go here to find the atmosphere and you might be trying to look into the kitchen as you go in front of the door. Just go in, eat and enjoy. Pitoritto is my favorite. TRY to eat the whole thing after a basket of chips....
Cafe Azteca. I absolutely love the food here. I've been driving from Mendenhall, MS, which a good distance, just to eat there for about 16 years and the food is alway fabulous. I have introduced this restaurant to all of my friends and family and they are all regular customers, also. My favorite dish is the Pitorito, but everything I have tried is exceptionally good. The chips and salsa is one of a kind that I haven't found anywhere else and is complimentary. They are seasoned perfectly. The cost of the food is cheap, especially the lunch specials, and you get alot of food for your money. I have to admit, the restaurant itself is not impressive or fancy, but the fabulous food makes up for it!
