The food was beyond poor...they did not know how to make a simple Cornish pastie..when I asked the waitress what was on our plate..she only said it was a stand in chef..never cooked british dishes before...he added all sorts of Indian spices to it...we made her try it..she was just as unimpressed...the food being delivered to other tables did not look like it was supposed to either and judging by other people's faces as they dug in...not impressed...I will not be back
What can I say. The food, service and the people are great. Dave and Kalena know how to treat people. The wings, curry dishes and fish and chips are very good. We have been going almost weekly for about 6 months and have never been disappointed.
My husband and I go to the penny whistle in Brantford quite often. I always enjoy the atmosphere and the staff are always very friendly. Venue is clean and cozy. I'm a big fan of the vindaloo chicken which is always excellent and I highly recommend their Indian cuisine. However my husband is not a big fan and therefore has tried lots of the other items on the menu and never been disappointed. Our food has always been hot and always good portions. I find the menu reasonable and the glasses of wine are large lol. My husband said that they have a good selection of beer which makes him very happy as well. We feel it's a hidden gem:)
Looked on Trip Advisor and checked out some restaurant reviews and decided to check Penny Whistle out. Was not sure what to expect but was willing to experience the moment. Came in and was pleasantly surprised with the cleanliness of the bar / restaurant. Tables were clean as well as the floors and bar area. Sat down and the waiter, Dave welcomed us. I mentioned that I had read the reviews on the restaurant which seemed t perk more interest. We asked about the menu, British, Canadian and Indian food and he explained the various chooses of food being offered. We picked two different dishes: Penny Whistle pie and the steak sandwich. The drinks were Tomato juice and iced tea. For starters we tried the soup of the day Carrot ginger (one bowl for two). The soup was extremely good (good taste). Would order again. The tomato juice was good bad surprised with the ice added. The ice tea was good and could the ice in that.Found the steak sandwich to be good with the garden salad (French) on the side. Could not eat the bun as it was large. The Penny Whistle pie was very good with chicken and veggies inside. The pastry was flaky not doughy which was good. The meal was very good as well as the price. Found the service by Dave to be very good. He came over several times to check and make sure all was good. He was very helpful during our visit. The owner also came over to check on the service and food. The restaurant was not busy initially (we came around 4:30 PM) however it was more then half full by the time we left at 6:30 PM. Not bad considering this was a long weekend. It was a good visit to this restaurant / British pub which we will visit again and try some other dishes so we can experience the moment.Good one Dave. Ted
