The food at this restaurant is excellent, and the service is usually great. It is a charming little shack by the water that is popular among customers. The jambalaya is delicious, and they serve cold beer. However, some customers have found the staff at the entrance to be unwelcoming at times. The table staff is fantastic, but the management or owners can be a bit surly. If they adopted a more customer-first approach, this place would easily be a 5/5. Overall, if you stick to interacting with the table staff, you will have a great experience, especially in the summer on the deck in the sunshine.
We go here occasionally as a treat for ourselves and have been trying for weeks to find a time that works and the other day, it finally happened. We arrived well before closing because we know it can be busy and they don't take reservations. When we got there, there was no line and the sign at the door asked to please wait and not block the door. We waited quietly for well over ten minutes as staff walked by never once making eye contact or acknowledging the fact that we were there. More people arrived behind us and then suddenly, a staff member appeared and started calling names of the people behind is. Okay, so you do take reservations, sort of. There's a list, how do we get on it? Despite trying to get the attention of staff we were once more ignored until finally another potential customer walked in and directly asked (after being rebuffed a couple of times themselves) if they'd be able to get on the wait list only to be told that no, the wait list was full for the evening. We understand fully that it's a small place with a limited kitchen and staff are hard to find at the moment. Being busy is fine and overall a great thing but you need to communicate with your customers and not ignore them. We were polite and quiet and don't expect any sort of special treatment but if your wait list is full and you don't want to talk to customers, put a note at the door so we don't waste ten to fifteen minutes standing there. Or, you know, actually talk to people. So we drove into Sidney and had a wonderful meal at Fish on Fifth whose staff who couldn't have been more opposite. They treated us like they wanted us to be there unlike Blue's Bayou who seem to see customers as an impediment to getting things done. Rude and entitled staff seems to be a problem here based on stories from friends.
We were so looking to our dinner get together at the Blue's Bayou Restaurant. They have a nice deck. They kitchen is closed till 5and don' take reservations. We were 10 people so we got there early, you can have a drink before. The owner or manager was really unfriendly, so was the chef. We have been there quite a few times, but won't go back until there attitude changes! We are in the business, and that is not how you treat customers. She made us sit on two tables so in order to talk you had to go over to the other table. There was no problem in moving 2 tables together for our group, but no . We had some friends who are also in the hotel busines and were not impressed either. Luckily our server was very friendly and made the evening a bit pleasant. Chicken and ribs were very good and nicely presented, all our steamed mussels were look warm with dried out corn bread, that does not go with mussels. Hind side with that reception we should have just gone somewhere else. We drove especially down from Nanaimo for the occasion.
We enjoyed it so much we are sad we won’t be able to visit again. The gumbo and jambalaya were absolutely delicious. Having lived in the southern US for many years we weren’t sure what to expect so far from Louisiana. We’re we ever pleasantly surprised. Also great service from the young man who was our server. Thank you!
